"I asked him, 'What would you do if I'm not human?'"
If it had been anyone else, their first reaction would've been to assume Fennec was joking.
She hadn't intended to lay everything out all at once. Instead, she would use the conversation as a way in. If Eddie didn't believe her, she could always just show him her tail.
Yet the moment the words left her mouth, he simply looked at her and engaged in a long, calm eye contact.
After a few seconds, he raised a hand and said, "I understand. You don't need to say more."
She hadn't even gotten to the part about who they really were, but he already seemed to grasp it.
But of course, as someone who had once believed in the Fox Deity, his ability to accept the extraordinary was far from average.
No wonder he had insisted on personally bringing them breakfast this morning.
Thalia was more than happy to see that Fennec had found a partner in this world.
The life of a fox demon was long and lonely, and Fennec had stayed behind in the alternate world in her place. If she had managed to find someone who could walk that road with her, of course, Thalia would offer her blessing.
Just as she was thinking that, the doorbell rang. Everyone instinctively turned toward the front of the villa.
"Did someone order food delivery?"
Given they had no real ties in this world—aside from Fennec—there shouldn't have been anyone dropping by. At this hour, a ringing doorbell could only mean one thing.
Everyone shook their heads.
Although Fennec had given them local phones the night before, none of them had even thought about ordering breakfast.
Thalia, however, seemed to realize something and quickly walked over to the video intercom by the entryway.
"It might be the lady who lent me the villa," she said. "We're using her property, and she's probably here to check…"
Adam stood quietly, eyes fixed on her face. She looked younger than he had imagined, but that didn't stop him from standing right before her.
Instead of answering who he was here for, he simply fixed his gaze on her and politely replied, "Nice to meet you. My name's Adam Jensen."
This was, in every scene, their first proper meeting.
He had played out countless versions of this moment in his mind, but in the end, he had discarded every carefully scripted approach.
Rather than circling around or waiting for the perfect pretext, he had chosen to come straight to her door.
Whatever her reasons were for avoiding him or disappearing, he had decided they both deserved this chance—a proper meeting for a moment of clarity. At least, that was one thing he could finally do for himself.
Seeing she was silent, he paused for a second before adding, "I think you know me."
Thalia silently replied, "Well, how can I not? You're the father of my children in the original world."
