"I was just thinking about Elowen."
The day Elowen took control of Shannon's consciousness, she didn't do much other than present a choice. She could've fully taken over, but instead, she returned Shannon's consciousness.
She said she only wanted to see Benjamin. She had—but that was about it.
Shannon had wondered more than once how Elowen felt when she finally saw Benjamin.
The Dragon Vein, which Elowen had once sacrificed her soul to create, still held Lucan's soul bones, but it was no longer the man he once was.
Could that be the reason Elowen left so decisively—that deep down, she knew he was no longer the same person she once loved? When she left, did she feel dejected or sorrowful?
Thalia didn't answer right away. Even Shannon, Elowen's reincarnation, couldn't say for sure what Elowen felt when her soul dissipated, so how could an outsider like her presume to know?
Instead, she turned to Shannon and spoke of a question she had once asked Louise.
"Back when I reconciled with your grandmother, I asked her, when she learned of my father's death, what went through her head? Had she tried finding his reincarnation over the years?"
Louise had answered her, "I did try. I even wanted to snatch his soul back from the underworld, and when I was stopped, I thought about waiting—guarding his soul, hoping for one more reincarnation.
"But the one who was reborn was one without the memories we shared. No matter how similar he might look, or how alike his temperament, he will never be the Edmund I once loved."
Since she had come to understand that, why force anything?
So, she let go, even if she did so reluctantly.
Thalia looked at Shannon and simply said, "I guess… Elowen had also let go in the end."
Something flickered in Shannon's eyes, as though some long-tangled thread in her heart had finally come loose and unraveled into clarity.
"What's this?" asked Shannon.
Eddie responded grimly, "A fan of mine from abroad sent it to me. Said it's from a livestream on the dark web for… illegal human organ trafficking."
Eddie had no idea why Fennec was suddenly so interested in something like this, but when it came to organ trafficking, all he really knew was what he had heard in passing.
On the distant continent of Seraveth, there was one country—the only one in the world—that had legalized the trade of human organs.
And the people whose bodies were sold there? They were called "human animals".
Shannon, still staring at the screen, could feel that twisted, bone-deep malice leaking through every pixel.
At that moment, she realized she might have found the leverage they needed to negotiate with the Alternate Divine Power.
