"Huh?" Myla looked up at Vincent with a confused gaze, only to hear him continue saying, "The concert is tomorrow. I'm worried finalizing the process might have side effects that could affect my performance."
Myla blinked. "That isn't possible, is it?"
But looking completely serious, Vincent replied, "Have you ever done something like this before?"
It was her first time getting divorced too, so of course not. She shook her head right away.
Vincent added, "See? You haven't either. We don't know if finishing the process will have any side effects, and I just don't want to take any chances."
He wasn't trying to stall, and it was a matter of keeping himself in top form for the next important part of his schedule. For the past two days, he'd avoided every food that might cause throat strain or facial puffiness.
Since none of them knew how burning a divorce contract for the underworld would affect their energy or fortune, the safest thing was to do nothing for now.
Myla figured it made sense. It was her fault that she'd shown up late too.
He suggested. "If you don't mind, could we wait until after my concert tour is finished before we proceed?"
She nearly laughed. "If you don't mind, how could I possibly mind?"
Then, as if muttering under her breath, she added, "I mean, anyone would probably feel weird being bound to a universal traveler in a nether contract…"
She spoke softly, like it was just a casual complaint, but Vincent heard every word.
Remembering that flicker of self-deprecation in her eyes the other day, he frowned and said, "I've never been uncomfortable about being bound to you through a nether contract. What makes you think I'd feel that way?"
Though people held funerals for the dead, they would usually go out of their way to avoid walking past a funeral home as if getting close to it might bring misfortune.
Myla had grown numb to all that after becoming a universal traveler. But when Vincent tried to save the dying Dennis that day, an indescribable defeat surged in her chest.
It was the kind of defeat that came from realizing the deep, invisible wall between them.
Even when she'd been rejected on blind dates, she'd never felt that sting. But that day, though Vincent had never once looked at her with judgment, she'd still felt hurt.
Myla had never been the sensitive or insecure type, but she'd felt that way in front of Vincent that day. Perhaps deep down, she'd felt afraid he'd feel ashamed of her.
Her voice was soft and barely audible, but it struck something deep in Vincent's heart and sent a quiet jolt through his chest. That was when he finally realized what she truly cared about.
