**Chapter 6**
As Ethan’s gaze fell upon the document thrust into his hands, a wave of panic surged within him, prompting him to instinctively retract Victoria’s touch. The crisp paper felt foreign, almost ominous, as he reluctantly accepted it. His heart sank as he read the words—divorce agreement. “Divorce?” he echoed, the word tasting bitter on his tongue.
In that instant, a memory jolted back to life. He recalled the day he had stumbled upon Stella, her face etched with anxiety as she scrolled through a similar document on her phone. Her reaction had been oddly defensive, claiming it was merely a request for her opinion from a lawyer friend. But now, the truth lay bare before him—this was the very document he had seen her with.
The lawyer, a stern figure with glasses perched precariously on his nose, adjusted them as he spoke. “Miss Morgan has submitted substantial evidence regarding your infidelity, requesting an expedited divorce.” His words were clinical, devoid of any empathy, and they cut through Ethan like a knife.
“From a professional standpoint,” the lawyer continued, “I advise you to sign the agreement. If this matter escalates to court, it will only become more convoluted.”
Ethan felt as if the ground beneath him had crumbled away. The weight of betrayal pressed down on his chest like a leaden stone.
With a mechanical motion, the lawyer handed over a USB drive, the evidence of his supposed transgressions contained within. “I didn’t cheat!” Ethan protested vehemently, his voice rising with desperation. “Where is Stella? I need to confront her about this! How could she betray me like this, getting involved with other men behind my back?”
The lawyer, witnessing Ethan’s turmoil, could only shake his head in resignation before gathering his belongings and exiting the room.
Victoria, standing nearby, wore an expression of triumph that only deepened Ethan’s sense of despair. He felt as though a massive chunk of his heart had been hollowed out, leaving him reeling from the shock.
He had never dared to imagine that Stella would actually file for divorce. Could it truly be over something as trivial as a photo album? Had his failure to capture moments of their life together pushed her to this breaking point?
Questions swirled chaotically in his mind, each one more tormenting than the last. “No, she must have misunderstood me!” he muttered to himself, his thoughts racing.
