Freya jerked her foot back and slipped it into her high heel. Liam’s hand froze in the air. “I thought you said your foot hurt?”

“I need to use the restroom. You guys keep drinking,” Freya said, standing up to leave.

Liam instinctively rose to his feet as well. “I’ll go with you.”

Ryan pulled him back and said, “For God’s sake, you’re a grown man-why are you clinging like glue?

You dragged me out of my cozy little nook, and now you’re gonna leave me here all alone? Does that make any sense?”

Liam looked hesitant. “You don’t get it. She’s been trying to divorce me lately. And this little liar is cunning; she almost slipped away right under my nose today.”

Ryan didn’t respond, just took a sip of his drink with a chuckle. ‘Who says I don’t know? I not only know it, but I know it in more detail than you do, he thought.

“Relax,” Freya said. “Lily is still under your control. I wouldn’t dare run.” She asked a waiter for directions to the restroom and walked off, her heels clicking on the floor.

Watching her walk away, Liam gritted his teeth in frustration and downed half a bottle of alcohol in one go. His phone started ringing again. Annoyed, Liam dismissed the call outright.

Ryan glanced at him. “Not even gonna take your mom’s call?”

Liam frowned. “Not in the mood.”

“You’re the one who got the girl pregnant. What are you mad about?” Ryan’s tone carried a hint of sarcasm.

But Liam had something on his mind-he didn’t catch it. He kept grumbling, “I don’t get it. I never even got in, so how the hell did she end up pregnant?”

“I’ve heard stories about girls getting pregnant from swimming,” Ryan said casually. “It’s a tiny chance, but it can happen.”

“Why did this tiny chance have to land on me? Damn it!” Liam grew more and more frustrated and finished off the remaining half of the bottle in one go.

Ryan snorted. “Who can you blame? Guess your guys are just too strong, too motivated.”

Liam shot him a glare. “Jealous?”

“What would I be jealous of?” Ryan was about to retort, but then he let out a bitter laugh. “Actually, yeah. I am jealous of you.”

Ryan had been jealous of Liam for over a decade-and that jealousy had driven him almost to the edge of madness.

Freya pulled out a tissue from the sink and wiped the water off her hands. Her foot was killing her-turns out her pinkie toe had gotten rubbed raw, and the pain was piercing.

She thought, “Turns out you really get what you pay for. These knockoff shoes look pretty good, but only the person wearing them knows how much they hurt.”

Just as Freya walked out, grinning and bearing the pain, she got stopped.

“Hey.” Ryan was leaning against the wall outside the restroom, propping his body up on one leg while the other was bent. He looked a bit dazed, maybe from the alcohol.

“You scared me. I thought Liam was coming after me again,” Freya said.

“He’s not coming,” Ryan informed her. “Natalie showed signs of a possible miscarriage. He was called home urgently by his mom.”

Freya let out a sigh of relief. ‘Great, he’s gone. He’s a complete lunatic now, using Lily to threaten me,’ she thought.

“Do you still want the divorce?” Ryan asked.

Freya rolled her eyes. “What kind of question is that?”

“Looked to me like you didn’t refuse when Liam was massaging your foot earlier,” Ryan pointed out. “Felt pretty good, didn’t it?”

Freya found it rather odd. “Why don’t you take your shoes off and stick your feet in his lap next time and see how it feels?”

Ryan straightened up and walked slowly towards her. “Why did you suddenly leave my place today?”

“Because-” Freya said.

“Because Liam showed up, and you couldn’t wait to see him?” Ryan cut in.

Freya thought the world had gone mad. Everyone seemed to be accusing her of having an affair. She said,

“Mr. Reed, rest assured. I’m a hundred percent set on getting a divorce.”
