Chapter 19
Adam stormed out of his lawyer’s office, his resolve unshaken. He didn’t care about the lawyer’s hesitations.
Brenda had crossed a line, and he was determined to make her pay. “Get started on the lawsuit,” he had ordered before slamming the door shut, leaving no room for further discussion.
By the time he arrived at his office, the atmosphere was… off. The usual buzz of activity felt muted, replaced by a strange tension.
He noticed staff members glancing his way, whispering behind their hands, their eyes filled with something he couldn’t quite place.
Adam frowned, his brows knitting together as he strode purposefully toward his office. “What the hell is going on?” he muttered under his breath.
He pushed open the door to his office and dropped his briefcase on the desk. His phone buzzed in his pocket, and he answered without checking the caller ID.
“Adam, have you seen the news?” his friend Mark’s voice came through, laced with urgency.
“No,” Adam replied, already irritated. “Why?”
“Turn on the TV. Right now,” Mark said.
“What is it?” Adam snapped, but Mark had already hung up.
Grumbling, Adam grabbed the remote and switched on the television. The screen flickered to life, and his heart sank into his stomach as Brenda’s face appeared, front and center.
She was sitting on a plush studio couch, tears streaming down her face as she spoke into a microphone.
“I trusted him,” Brenda sobbed, her voice trembling for dramatic effect. “I thought he cared about me, but all he did was use me. He got me pregnant, fired me, and now he’s abandoned me. I have nowhere to go, no one to turn to.”
The camera panned to the sympathetic host, who leaned forward, her expression one of carefully rehearsed concern. “That’s such a heartbreaking story, Brenda. Do you want to share the name of this man who hurt you so deeply?”
Brenda sniffled, dabbing at her eyes with a tissue. “I never wanted to ruin his reputation,” she began, her voice quivering. “But I can’t stay silent anymore. The man who did this to me… is Adam Monroe, the CEO of Monroe Enterprises.”
Adam’s jaw dropped, his hand clutching the remote so tightly that his knuckles turned white. “What the—”
Brenda continued, her voice growing steadier, more confident. “He pretended to care, made promises he never intended to keep, and now I’m left to pick up the pieces. Women like me need to stand up and speak out. We deserve better.”
The screen cut to the host, who nodded solemnly. “Brenda, you’re incredibly brave for sharing your story. We’re here to support you.”
Adam’s phone slipped from his hand and clattered to the floor, but he barely noticed. His mind was racing, disbelief giving way to anger.
Mark leaned forward, his voice low. “Is she lying about the baby?”
Adam froze, his jaw tightening. “No,” he admitted reluctantly. “The baby is….I don’t even know. But everything else? It’s complete bullshit.”
Mark sighed, shaking his head. “Then you need to get ahead of this, fast. Public opinion is already turning against you. You’re trending on social media, for God’s sake.”
Adam slammed his fist on the desk. “I’m not letting her destroy my reputation. I’ll sue her for defamation, for slander, for whatever the hell I can.”
“You can’t,” Mark said, his tone cautious.
“Why not?”
“Because the public believes the baby is yours,” Mark reminded him. “That gives her a foothold. If you go after her, she could counter-sue and drag this out in court for years. It’ll only make things worse.”
Adam leaned back in his chair, his mind spinning. “So what am I supposed to do? Just let her ruin me?”
Mark was silent for a moment before answering. “You need to figure out what she really wants. Maybe it’s money. Maybe it’s revenge. Either way, you need to handle this delicately.”
