The suitcase scraped lightly against the hardwood as I yanked it out from under Conner’s bed. I’d seen this one before. More times than I could count, actually. He used it whenever he traveled for business, meetings, or whatever work pulled him away. Always this case. Always in his hand. But now? Now it was mine too. The zipper peeled back with a rasp, and I started shoving things inside. Not just for me, though I grabbed the few things I owned that felt like mine but for him too. Shirts, spare pants, socks. I knew where he kept them, what he wore most, and how he folded them. I’d stalked him long enough, studied him long enough, to know his habits by heart. Obsession had its perks.

My hands shook once, just once, when I paused with one of his sweaters bunched in my fists. It smelled like him. Smoke, iron, something sharp and male that clung to the fabric. For half a second, I wanted to bury my face in it. Instead, I stuffed it down the side of the bag and forced myself to keep moving. No time for weakness. The house below rattled with movement. Boots on floors. Voices clipped and low. The kind of tension that meant lives were about to shift. I shoved one last bundle inside, zipped the case shut, and dragged it out into the hall. My shoulder screamed, but I ignored it. By the time I made it back downstairs, Nico was already bent over the desk, fingers flying, scrubbing the surveillance systems clean. Every trace of us, of me, was being burned. Good. Across the room, Matteo hunched over Ari’s bloodied form, Winnie hovering like a shadow at his shoulder. The last bullet was gone, I could see Matteo’s steady hands, the dark stains soaking his wrists, but the work wasn’t done. Ari was pale, eyes halfclosed, her breath rasping through clenched teeth.

We’ll finish on the road,Matteo muttered, already nodding toward the door.

Conner’s voice cut sharply through the chaos. Time to move.

I slung the suitcase higher, but instead of heading to the door, I caught his hand. His eyes snapped down to me, confusion flickering beneath the hard edges of command.

Wait.

He shook his head. We don’t have time to wait, Sage

The trophy room,I whispered, tugging him closer. It’s a museum in my name. My tag on every wall, every case. If Yakov gets word, if his men ever breach this house, they’ll know exactly what I am and that I was here.

Conner swore under his breath, a low growl. You want me to burn it? That’s my room. My gifts. All of them.

I stepped closer, pressing my voice against the shell of his ear. I’ll give you new ones. Better ones. But we can’t leave those behind.

His eyes burned into mine, torn between refusal and understanding. Then, with a muttered curse, he yanked my hand and we sprinted. The door groaned open, and the air hit thick with memory, case after case of my life carved in steel and glass. Severed hands, bullets, little notes, tokens of bloodsoaked devotion. My devotion. My obsession. Our strange, twisted language.

Christ,he whispered, throat tight.

I didn’t let myself linger. I grabbed the nearest lamp, knocked it hard against the glass. Shards cascaded, glittering in the low light. Conner was at my side in an instant, dragging cases down, scattering mementos across the floor. We worked fast, almost frantically, until the air reeked of dust and broken things. Conner pulled a canister from the shelf, doused the room in accelerant, his jaw set tight. One flick of the match and flames roared, eating through every scrap of evidence.

The fire lit his face, caught in the edges of his mask of fury and grief. He hesitated only once, staring into the blaze like it were a funeral pyre. Then his hand found mine again.

New ones.I promised, squeezing hard.

:.

New ones,he echoed, dragging me out as the room burned behind us.

One of the guards pulled the SUV up close. The rear hatch slammed open, and I watched as Matteo and Winnie lifted Ari carefully, their voices sharp with focus but calm. Blood streaked down Matteo’s shirt, Winnie’s smaller hands pressing hard with gauze to slow the seep. Ari didn’t make a sound.

Move.Matteo ordered. They eased her into the back, setting up what little space they had to keep her alive. Winnie was already sliding in after her, barking for more towels, for tape, for anything she could use to hold her together until we reached the jet.

The sight of it, their blood, the scramble, the inevitability of it all snapped something hard inside me. I gripped the suitcase tighter and forced my voice steady. This is what we do. This is what we are.

Let’s go.

The SUV door slammed shut behind me, the echo drowned out by the roar of flames as they chewed through the house. The windows pulsed orange, shadows flickering against the glass as if the place itself was screaming. My chest tightened with every mile the car put between us and that fire, because it wasn’t just a house burningit was his history, his trophies, his proof of me. I turned in the seat, watching the blaze shrink through the rear window until it was nothing but a smear against the night. The guilt pressed harder than the bruises on my ribs.

I’m sorry,I whispered, voice cracking before I could swallow it back. For all of it. For everything you’re losing. For being so stupid as to put you in danger. I should’ve stayed away

Conner’s hands were suddenly on my face, firm and steady, forcing me to look at him. His eyes burned hotter than the fire we’d just left behind.

Sweetheart,he said, his voice low, raw, but unshakably sure, I would’ve lost my damn mind if you never stepped out of the shadows. His thumbs brushed my cheeks, grounding me, claiming me. If everything I have burns to the fucking ground, I’ll still be a happy man. Because I have you.

The SUV rattled over a bump, but he didn’t let go, didn’t look away. For the first time since Yakov’s hands had dragged me back into hell, I let myself believe him.
