“Even if she’s really in there, there’s nothing we can do to get her out. We’d just be risking our own lives for nothing,” said another officer, his voice heavy. “And besides, we don’t even know for sure if Miss Lawrence is inside.”
Hank was crying so hard that he could barely catch his breath. “She saved my entire family, but I can’t save her… I can’t save her, no matter what I do… Why am I so helpless? Why am I so useless?”
One officer kept a watchful eye on Hank, doing his best to calm Hank down, while the other two desperately fought to keep the flames from spreading even further.
About a couple more minutes passed before the fire trucks finally arrived, sirens blaring.
As soon as Hank saw the firefighters, he dashed forward, shouting, “Help! Someone’s still inside!”
The firefighters quickly split into two squads. One crew fought to contain the blaze, while the other rushed into the wooden house to rescue whoever was trapped inside.
At this point, the wooden house didn’t even look like a house anymore. It was just a pile of wood up in flames, crackling and popping like fireworks every few seconds.
The firefighters kept trying to get inside, but the fire was just way too intense. Eventually, they had to fight the blaze while hacking away at the charred wood, one piece at a time.
With the combined effort of the police and firefighters, it took three grueling hours to finally bring the blaze under control.
Once the fire was out, the firefighters started clearing up the wreckage and taking stock of just how much had been lost.
The inferno had completely wiped out a wooden house halfway up the mountainside, along with twenty- three trees that were reduced to ashes.
The fire chief turned to the two officers and said, “Thanks to you guys jumping in and cutting off the fire before it spread, the damage wasn’t nearly as bad as it could’ve been. We really appreciate the support.”
The officers replied, “We were just doing what needed to be done. If it’s safe enough now, we’d like to go inside and check if anyone is still trapped.”
Just then, two firefighters brought out a body burned so badly that it was beyond recognition. Nothing left but a charred, blackened shell.
The officers went stiff in shock. “There really was someone inside…”
Hank stared at the ruined corpse, his body trembling like crazy. He just couldn’t hold it together anymore and passed out right there on the ground.
When Hank finally came to, he found himself lying in a hospital bed, a doctor tending to the burns on his
arm.

He just by there, motionless, totally unresponsive, as if all the light had left his eyes
Harvey kind of knew Hank Harvey felt obliged to swing by the hospital when he heard Hank got burned
But seeing Hank sitting there, looking like he was completely hollowed out, Harvey frowned and asked, “Are you okay? What’s going on?”
Hank just kept staring into space, not saying a word, like he hadn’t even heard Harvey at all.
“How did you get burned so badly?” Harvey moved closer to get a look at the burns on Hank’s arm. “What happened to you?
Hank finally looked up at Harvey, and all of a sudden, tears started streaming down his face. He was so choked up he could barely get a word out.
Harvey was startled to see Hank in such bad shape. He quickly handed Hank a tissue and said, “Don’t cry. What’s going on? Just tell me. Maybe I can help.”
Hank sobbed, almost choking on his words, “Alicia… she’s gone.”
Harvey stared at him, stunned. ‘Did I hear that right? That can’t be… he thought, his mind reeling.
With a deep frown, Harvey said, “What are you talking about? Don’t say stuff like that.”
Hank, sounding utterly lost, muttered under his breath, “She was such a good person. She saved my whole family. Even after how I treated her, she never blamed me and still helped me. We owe her a lot. Why? Why do good people never get to live long?”
Harvey was completely baffled. He grabbed Hank’s shoulders, trying to shake some sense into him. “What are you even saying? You need to be clear with me. What happened?”
At that. Hank finally looked up at Harvey, as if he’d snapped back to reality. Tears streaming down his face, he stammered out, “Alicia burned to death in the fire.”
Harvey fixed his gaze on Hank, his tone sharp. “Come on. Tell me exactly what happened.”
Hank finally managed to blurt out the whole story.
Harvey’s eyes went wide in shock. He didn’t spare Hank another glance. In a flash, he pulled out his phone and called Charles without hesitation.
Charles wasn’t even in the country. He’d flown out on business two days before. When Alicia messaged him on WhatsApp, he was on a plane, totally missing her text.
So he was completely in the dark about everything. He just shot back, “I’m out of town right now. I’ll get in
touch when I’m back.”
But Alicia never saw his message. Of course, she never got the chance to reply. At the time, Charles didn’t
think much of it.
Right now, he was at the Atna Hotel in Meridia, locked in talks with one of the biggest financial titans in the

country over a massive project he’d been chasing for more than half a year. The contract was finally within reach. It was a deal worth billions.
His phone suddenly started ringing, but he didn’t even bother to answer. He just hit decline and kept his focus on the meeting.
But Harvey wasn’t about to give up. He just kept calling over and over again.
Anthony Huffman, the guy Charles was negotiating with, noticed and said. “Mr. Yates, why don’t you go ahead and take that call? I could use a coffee break anyway. I’m starting to feel a bit tired.”
Charles nodded with a smile.
As soon as Anthony got up and left, Charles picked up the phone, his face cold as ice. “Harvey, you better have something really important to say, or I swear I’ll make you regret it.”
Harvey’s voice trembled as he stammered, “Charlie, something terrible happened to Alicia…”
The moment Charles heard Alicia’s name, his heart dropped and he asked, “What happened?”
Harvey hurriedly relayed everything Hank had told him, recounting the whole devastating story without leaving anything out.
Charles sat staring blankly for a long while before he finally stood up, his whole body radiating an icy rage that could freeze anyone in their tracks.
“Who the hell kidnapped her?” he asked, striding toward the door with pure menace in his step.
Harvey said, “We’re really not sure yet. But Hank told me Alicia warned him she was probably going to get kidnapped soon. She even gave him a tracker, said if she ended up at the Lawrence residence, he should call the cops.
“When Hank tried to report it, the cops said they couldn’t help because she hadn’t been missing for 48 hours. Later, the tracker showed she was somewhere up in the mountains, so Hank went looking for her. The cops caught up with him, and just as they were climbing up the mountain together, the whole place went up in flames.
Harvey rushed to get it all out, barely stopping to breathe.
“So, was it the Lawrence family behind this?” Charles’s voice was quiet, like steel dipped in ice, but the viciousness in his tone sent a chill down Harvey’s spine.
“We’re not sure yet. I’ll head over to the police station to get more info. Where are you right now?” Harvey
asked.
“I’m in Meridia, but I’m coming back immediately. Go to the police station and get all the details. Also, don’t let anyone handle that body. I want to see it with my own eyes,” Charles said, his voice sharp and commanding.
“Charles…” Harvey called out, sympathy heavy in his voice. He knew this was the first time Charles had ever loved someone. And now, with Alicia gone, the pain must be unimaginable for him.

Charles stopped for half a second, his tone icy and decisive. “Arrange a flight home for me immediately. The Yates family’s private jet needs to be ready to pick me up.
Allen was kind of freaking out. “But Mr. Yates, things with Mr. Huffman are finally moving forward. We’re so close to nailing this deal. The contract is just a couple days away. We’ve been grinding on this project for months, and if you sign now, it’ll put the Yates Group on the map in finance.
