After sending the photo, Alicia ladled a bowl of soup for Charles and handed it to him. “Here you go, Mr. Yates. Have some soup.”
“Sure.” Charles set his phone aside, accepted the bowl, and took a sip. A faint smile touched his lips. “Join me,”
he said.
Alicia nodded and served herself a bowl.
As she lowered her eyes to drink, Charles found his gaze lingering on her.
A compelling thought seized him-He needed to make her his wife, and soon. Only then could he protect her openly, without pretense.
Sensing his stare, Alicia looked up. Her smile bloomed, so bright and radiant it nearly dazzled him. *****
As Alicia was leaving the hospital, she ran straight into Hank.
Fiona had been craving croissants that day, so Hank had gone out to buy some. He was just returning when- right at the hospital entrance-he collided with Alicia.
Hank froze, his eyes reddening. The paper bag in his hand slipped, nearly tumbling to the ground.
Alicia lunged forward, caught it, and pressed it back into his hand. “Hold it tighter. If you drop it, it’s ruined. The floors here are drenched in disinfectant.”
Hank took the bag, lowering his gaze as tears traced paths down his cheeks. When he looked up again, his eyes were raw and bloodshot. “Alicia,” he murmured.
The sight of a grown man crying sent a jolt through her. ‘Wait… Could Sasha be having complications after the transplant?’ she wondered with sudden unease.
‘No, that can’t be. After all that money, after owing Doctor Johnson a huge favor-if Sasha takes a turn for the worse, wouldn’t all that cash just be flushed away?’
“What happened?” she asked, her voice tight with worry. “Is something wrong with Sasha?”
Hearing her concern for his sister, Hank was even more moved-and more agonized. ‘How can she be this gentle, this unthinkingly kind?’ he wondered, his heart aching with the weight of it.
‘She just survived a kidnapping. She was almost killed, and here she is, still fretting over my sister’
His face contorted into a strange, twisted expression, caught between a smile and a sob. He shook his head. “No, Sasha’s fine.”
Alicia let out a quiet sigh of relief. “Then why are you crying?”
Hank wanted to say he was worried about her, but the words stuck in his throat. ‘What right do I have? What am I to her?’

The memory of his past hurt towards her surfaced, lacing his guilt with fresh pain.
All he could do was make a silent vow: from now on, he would see Alicia as his savior. He was determined repay her, even if it cost him his life.
If Hank had known that Alicia’s concern for Sasha was really just anxiety over her investment going to waste, his feelings would have been very different. But of course, Alicia would never tell him.
Hank wiped roughly at his eyes. “I’m not crying. Just got something in my eye.”
Alicia’s lips twitched. She patted his shoulder. “Come on, cut down on the soap operas. That excuse only works for the lovesick leads on TV. If you say that to me, it feels like you’re taking me for a fool.”
Hank could only stand there in awkward silence.
“Alright, I’m heading out,” Alicia said, waving a hand before turning away.
Since he didn’t want to talk, she wouldn’t press. She had enough on her own plate without juggling anyone else’s drama.
Hank stared at her retreating back until she vanished from sight. Only then did he clutch the bag of croissants and slowly make his way upstairs. *****
Alicia had taken time off work and spent two full days at the hospital caring for Charles.
The next day was the deadline Edward West had set for her and Tiffany.
At night, Edward called. “Hey, kiddo, got everything ready?”
“All set, Edward,” she answered softly with a chuckle.
“Good, good,” he laughed. “This old man even went out of his way to invite some reporters-really put my dignity on the line for you!”
Alicia grinned. “I promise I won’t embarrass you.”
Edward paused for a second before adding, “My kids found out about the reporters. They’ll be there too, but… well, they don’t have a way with words. Whatever they say, just tune it out, alright?”
Alicia understood immediately-his kids sounded like a bunch she’d rather not deal with.
But honestly, it didn’t matter. It wasn’t like she was going to live under their roof. If things came to the worst, she would simply cut ties with them. If they treated Edward well, she’d be civil; if not, she’d just take him away and care for him herself.
Thinking this, she let out a soft laugh. “Don’t worry, Edward. I’m not about to start anything with your kids.”
“Sorry you have to put up with this,” he sighed.
“It’s no trouble at all. Go get some rest now,” Alicia said with a gentle smile.

Chapter 135
Finally, Edward hung up.

He lay sprawled on his bed, worn to the bone. ‘Once I’ve officially made Alicia my apprentice, that’s it, he thought. No more public life, and no more rotating through my kids’ houses. I’ll just stay with Alicia and spend my remaining years with her.’
The last three days had totally run him ragged. Every one of his kids kept blowing up his phone with some “urgent matter,” dragging him over to their place-only for him to realize they just wanted to introduce him to some rich kid, hoping he’d take them in as a student.
They’d already pocketed hefty gifts from those families, and now they kept pestering him, trying to strong- arm him into accepting them.
With each house he visited, disappointment hit him harder. Not one of his children cared enough to ask how he was. All they ever said the moment he walked in was, “Dad, you’ve got to accept this super talented kid-it’s urgent!”
Edward stood his ground and rejected every single one. So his kids had no choice but to return all those lavish gifts-and of course, that blew up into a massive shouting match.
Those three days had completely wiped him out-he’d been so swamped and exhausted that he hadn’t even had a moment to check in with Alicia. It wasn’t until tonight, when he finally dragged himself back home, that he finally found the time to give her a call.
Naturally, he remained entirely unaware of the ordeal she had endured; a full day and night of her kidnapping had passed without his knowledge.
Early the next day, Edward had just woken up and was cracking eggs into a bowl for breakfast when his three kids showed up out of the blue at his little yard.
Seeing him still preparing his own food, they rushed up to him in a hurry. “Dad, why are you still making breakfast here?”
“If I don’t make my own toast and eggs, what am I supposed to eat?” Edward shot them an annoyed look. “What are you all doing in my yard this early?”
His daughter Liora gave him a big smile. “Dad, we’ve booked a hotel, and breakfast is on the house. They have a full buffet over there-way better than your simple toast and eggs.”
Edward replied coolly, “I’m too much of a plain guy for all that fancy stuff. Just give me some scrambled eggs and toast, and I’m set.”
His eldest son, Silas, sounded annoyed. “Dad, seriously, you’re not a little kid anymore. Can you stop acting like one and always expecting us to coax you?”
His second son, Zane, chimed in, “Exactly, Dad, we’re all worn out. Other families have parents who actually support their kids, but the three of us have to figure everything out on our own. Not only do you never help us—you always ruin things for us. We’re honestly exhausted!”
Edward was so mad at what they said, he started coughing hard. “Ruin things for you? If you weren’t always

using my name as your ticket, do you think I’d even get dragged into your mess?”
Liora hurried over, supporting Edward. “Dad, take it easy, alright? I’ll talk to Silas and Zane.”

She helped Edward to a chair, then pulled Silas and Zane aside and whispered, “Why say those things to Dad now? You’re just going to make the old man even more stubborn. Let’s try to coax him, tidy him up a bit, and bring him to the hotel. That’s the only way things are going to work.”
