Hugh spent another day in the hospital, only leaving when Tiffany was about to be taken away by the police. He had no choice but to check himself out and handle the trouble Tiffany had gotten into.

Alicia had no idea how Hugh managed to pull it off, but the end result was that Tiffany walked free, all charges dropped. Aaron took responsibility for everything and ended up sentenced to seven years in prison.

Tiffany wasted no time and left the country in a flash.

Finally, things with the Lawrence family settled down.

Alicia finally settled back into her studies, and from time to time, she would visit Edward, spending hours with him discussing paintings and sharing their thoughts on art.

Edward had no intention of leaving; he planned to stay in that little courtyard for good. Ever since Alicia began dropping by, he slowly filled the place with new things, making it cozier bit by bit.

Their conversations would often drift into the past, weaving together the stories and memories from all the years they had spent apart.

Alicia mentioned how she had supported herself at the Lawrence house by selling her paintings. Then she remembered it was time to let Edward see what she’d painted all these years.

It had been a long time since she last logged onto her old overseas art site.

Now that it was on her mind, she signed in to show Edward photos of the paintings she’d sold through the site.

But to her surprise, as soon as she logged in, she saw a message waiting for her.

It was sent by the buyer who’d purchased her painting.

Fred: [Reborn Soul, today a man came by and saw your paintinghe looked totally fired up, almost emotional. He wanted to know more about it, but I didn’t share any of your personal info. I don’t have your contact details, so all I could do was leave you his. If you see this, please get back to me.]

The message was sent five days ago.

Then, three days ago, Fred had sent another message.

Fred: [Reborn Soul, that man stopped by again asking about your painting. Please get back to me ASAP.]

And then yesterday, there was another message.

Fred: [Reborn Soul, that man said he’s returning home and isn’t sure when he’ll be back. He left his details. If you’re comfortable, could you provide your number?]

Alicia’s breath caught. Could my parents really have been found?

A torrent of questions followedwho were they? Why did they leave her? Was it a cruel choice or a desperate

one?

The ancient hope, so often bruised, warred with a fresh, sharp fear. It was the terror of a door finally opening after a lifetime of waiting.

Swallowing her trepidation, she finally replied: [Sorry, I forgot to give you my number. It’s (604) 555XXXX.J

Soon after, she received a reply.

Fred: [Oh God, you finally replied! Mr. Mercer just leftI’ll try to catch him, maybe I’m not too late.]

Reborn Soul: [No need, thank you, Fred. Can you give me his contact details?]

Fred: [Of course, he left this number: (212) 555XXXX.]

Reborn Soul: [Thank you!]

Fred: [You’re welcome. If you end up reconnecting with your folks, I’ll feel like I did a good deed. Just let me know when it all works out.]

Reborn Soul: [Will do!]

After replying to the message, Alicia took a deep breath to calm her nerves. Then she went ahead and downloaded all the photos of the paintings she’d sold on that site over the years, handing them over for Edward to see, one at a time.

Edward, these are all the paintings I’ve sold on that website all these years. They’re lined up from oldest to newesthave a look,Alicia said softly.

Edward was roasting potatoes in the stove. A wave of sweet, earthy warmth filled the room as he lifted the stove lid. He pulled out a perfectly roasted potato, its skin crisp and glistening, and wrapped it in a clean kitchen towel before handing it to Alicia. Here, kiddo, this will tide you over until dinner. It’s your favorite. I remember.

Alicia’s face lit up as she took it. Thanks, Edward! You actually remembered!

Her nose suddenly tingled, and her throat felt tight. After all these years, he still kept track of the little things

she loved.

Edward noticed her eyes glisten and tapped her lightly on the head. Why the misty eyes? If I don’t remember what my granddaughter likes, who will? You’re mine, aren’t you?

Alicia leaned her head on his shoulder. You’re the sweetest.

Go on, eat,Edward said, turning to wash his hands. While you do, let’s check out how your art’s grown- hand me your phone

He squinted at the screen, his brows furrowed, age had softened his eyesight, and the tiny display blurred the details. With a huff, he shuffled back inside to grab his glasses.

By then, Alicia had peeled the potato. She held it out to him. You eat first. I’ll get my laptopway easier to see my paintings on a big screen than this phone.

Edward took a bite, his eyes closing for a second. Nothing tastes better than a potato peeled by my girl.”

Alicia laughed quietly, fetched her laptop from inside, and brought it out to the courtyard.

She’d just powered it up and logged into her art website when a warm laugh floated over from the doorway. Oh, Alicia’s here too!

Alicia looked up. Standing there was a woman in her fortieswearing a tailored wool coat, her hair neatly pinned back, and black boots that clicked softly on the stone. She carried armfuls of bags and boxes, and her smile made her look kind, capablebut Alicia had no idea who she was.

Does she know me?she wondered, blinking in confusion.

Alicia had no idea who this woman was.

Then she saw who was trailing just behindthe woman was with Silas, Edward’s eldest son. It clicked for Alicia; she must be Silaswife.

The woman, Tiana West, stepped into the courtyard, greeting Edward with a cheerful grin, Edward.”

Edward’s expression instantly hardened. What brings you two here?

Edward, don’t be like that,Tiana said, her smile easy. You’re here aloneof course we, your son and daughterinlaw, had to stop by to check on you.

With that, she walked straight to the table, dumped all her bags and boxes onto it, and didn’t skip a beat before grabbing Alicia’s hand.

Having started life over again, Alicia really wasn’t used to people getting so touchyfeely.

She instinctively tried to pull her hand back, but Tiana held on gently, giving it a soft pat as she smiled brightly. So this is Alicia? Wow, you’re absolutely lovely!

She turned to Silas with a laugh. I saw online people saying your father took in some angelas a student1 rolled my eyes! I thought, c’mon, how nice could she really be? But seeing her in person? Yeah, they weren’t exaggeratingshe is truly beautiful, like something out of a painting!

Silas let out a couple of dry chuckles, silently thinking his wife was laying the compliments on way too thick.

If he was honest, Silas still didn’t think much of Alicia. She was just some girl with no background, no connectionsshe couldn’t really bring anything to the table for their family.

He was even considering whether he should try suggesting to his dad that he take in a few more students, maybe ones who could actually benefit the family.

But when Silas brought it up with Tiana yesterday, she just shrugged and said, Your dad’s stubbornthere’s no way we can make him change his mind. If he doesn’t want more students, we can’t force it. But now that he’s chosen Alicia as his student, we should make use of her too. Can’t let some girl just reap benefits from our

family for nothing.”

Silas honestly still had no idea what exactly they’d useAlicia for, but Tiana suggested that he should pick a day when Alicia was around and bring her along to visit Edward.

So that’s why they ended up coming today.

But what completely threw Silas for a loop was how his wife started laying it on thick with Alicia the second they met he honestly couldn’t figure out what kind of game she was playing.

In the end, though, it wasn’t like he had a choice; all he could do was play along.
