Alicia pressed on, “Then why didn’t I grow up with you? I was so young, just a baby wrapped in a blanket. There’s no way I could’ve wandered off, right?”

Eleanor hesitated, clearly struggling with the truth. “It was…” She didn’t want to explain what happened all those years ago.

Eleanor didn’t want Alicia to feel hatred, or to think that her grandparents didn’t love her. But at the same time, she couldn’t bring herself to lie. Right now, she felt heartbroken, and the bitterness towards Theodore’s parents only grew.

Theodore, seeing Alicia’s probing questions, narrowed his eyes. “Are you trying to blame us? We gave you life. Without us, you wouldn’t even be here. You shouldn’t be pushing us like this.”

Eleanor was shocked by Theodore’s words. She grabbed his arm. “What are you saying?”

Theodore pulled her closer. “Eleanor, this kid has clearly never been taught proper manners. I’m her father. I’m the one who needs to guide her.

“She hasn’t caused any real problems yet, but we need to teach her. If we don’t, who’s going to handle the mess when it comes?”

Alicia sneered. “Did you ever ask me if I even wanted to be born? Now you’re saying I’m pushing you? I just want to know–did you abandon me because you didn’t love me, or was it an accident?

“If it’s because you didn’t love me, then I don’t see why I should try to reconnect with you. It’s just going to make things awkward for you.”

Theodore took a deep breath. “We never stopped loving you. It was an accident. Your grandparents took you out to play one day, and for a moment, they weren’t paying attention.

“That’s when someone took you. We’ve been looking for you ever since. Don’t overthink it.”

Alicia lowered her gaze and nodded. “Okay, I understand.”

Theodore sighed and, after a pause, said, “I was just anxious, worried you’d pick up the wrong attitude. I got harsh because I care. Don’t take it the wrong way.”

Eleanor nodded, gently adding, “Your dad works with students all the time, and he’s always worried they’ll go down the wrong path, so he tends to lecture. It’s kind of a habit, but he really does care about you.

“He’s been looking for you all these years because of a drawing on your blanket, the one I made. That’s why we found you”

Alicia stayed quiet, just giving a small nod.

Eleanor softly asked, “Now that we’ve finally found each other as a family, let’s move forward. We can be together from now on. By the way, when can we meet the old man who took you in?”

Alicia nodded. “Sure, I’ll check with him and see when he’s free.”

Theodore couldn’t help but feel a bit disdainful. So Alicia was raised by a guy? That must mean the guy never had any kids–just some lonely old man. Probably didn’t adopt her out of kindness, either.

‘I mean, what would a childless old man want with a baby, except hoping she’d stick around to take care of him when he gets old? And Alicia actually treats him like real family, he thought, shaking his head.

Theodore frowned slightly. ‘Wait, are we supposed to take care of that guy too now? Taking in a daughter with no blood ties to me is already enough of a stretch. And random old guy too? Man, I must have lost my mind:

He kept these thoughts to himself, just turning it over in his mind.

Eleanor nodded. “Right, check with him and let us know when. We’ll set up a time.”

Alicia nodded in return. “Sure.”

The conversation ended, and they left the restaurant.

Eleanor asked, “Alicia, where are you going now? Should we drive you?”

Alicia shook her head, smiling. “It’s fine. I’ve got class this afternoon. You guys don’t need to wait for me–go ahead and handle your business.”

Eleanor was about to suggest waiting for Alicia to finish class and then taking her home, but Theodore cut in. “Let’s go, Eleanor. I’ll drop you off first. I’ve got a class later too.”

Reluctantly, Eleanor agreed and left with Theodore.

After class, as Alicia walked out of the school, she unexpectedly spotted Henry standing near the gate.

He was holding a bouquet of bright red roses. Standing at six feet tall, with a fit physique from playing basketball, Henry caught the attention of nearly every passing student, especially with the flowers in his hands.

When he saw Alicia, he quickly walked up to her.

Alicia, acting as if she didn’t know him, just walked past without acknowledging him.

Henry, irritated by the cold shoulder, called out loudly, “Alicia!” He stepped into her path, blocking her way.

Alicia shot him a cold look. “What do you want?”

“What, you really can’t see me standing right here? You’re just gonna walk past like I’m invisible?” Henry called out, disbelief and irritation in his voice.

“Yeah, I see you. So? What’s it to me?” Alicia shot back, her tone cool and detached.

Henry clenched his jaw, clearly fed up with her indifference. “Seriously, how long are you planning to give me the cold shoulder? It’s been forever. Aren’t you over it yet?”

Alicia was bored with the conversation. She didn’t want to repeat herself, so she responded indifferently, “If you think I’m sulking, then think that. Whatever.”

She tried to walk past him, but Henry grabbed her wrist. He softened his tone. “Alicia, stop. Let’s make up, okay? I know you still have feelings for me.

“Otherwise, you wouldn’t be living in my uncle’s house, would you? You’re using my name to stay there. If you really wanted to break things off, you wouldn’t be doing that, right?”

Alicia stared at him in disbelief. “Wait. Your uncle?”

Henry looked confused for a moment but then smirked, realizing she didn’t know who he was. “I’m a Yates. You know, the wealthy Yates family. If my uncle doesn’t have any kids, everything will be mine.”

Alicia’s mind whirled. ‘Hold on–Henry’s part of the Yates family? Mr. Yates’s nephew? I just figured Henry was well–off. Who knew he was literally the Yates future heir?‘

Back then, she was locked away in that basement. Tiffany would come by every few days to torment her, bragging about all the new things she had gotten.

But Tiffany never once tried to show off Henry’s background, never even hinted he was Charles’s nephew.

Alicia was puzzled. This didn’t add up. If Tiffany was dating someone as prominent as Henry, she’d have been bragging about it viciously. The silence was utterly unlike her. The whole thing felt wrong.

When Alicia didn’t react at all, Henry assumed she had no idea which Yates family he meant–after all, there were tons of people with the last name Yates out there.

She might not know the family, but there was no way she hadn’t heard of his uncle. So Henry spoke up, “My uncle is Charles Yates. Surely you’ve heard of him?”

Alicia raised an eyebrow. “I’ve heard of him. So, you’re really from the Yates family? This is news to me.”

Henry, smug, said, “I had to keep my identity secret because so many girls are after me. I couldn’t tell if they liked me for who I am or because of my family. I wasn’t trying to fool you, Alicia. I hope you’re not upset

about that.”
