“Let’s say, hypothetically, it really was Alexia who did it. That would mean Chad already knew Avery. So Chad sent Alexia to take care of Avery, worried he’d spill something damaging on the witness stand and drag Chad down with him. Basically, kill the witness, kill the problem.”
Ms. Evadne had a wild imagination and a knack for connecting the dots, no matter how faint. Even the tiniest crumbs of information could send her down a rabbit hole of startling theories.
Cassius’s eyes went wide. “Chad knew Avery? But there’s never been any connection between them. None.”
Aaron nodded in agreement. “After I learned Alexia had any contact with Avery, I dug into her background. There’s nothing. No overlap, no shared history, nothing that links her to Avery at all.”
Evadne pressed, “But then why did she suddenly start volunteering at the free clinic? Aaron, even you said it was out of character for her.”
“It’s not just the clinic,” Aaron replied. “She’s also been appointed as a prison doctor—a special consultant, actually. All the paperwork’s gone through. She’s officially starting next month.”
Aaron’s brow furrowed. “Sure, maybe it’s a coincidence. Evadne, I wish catching the killer was as easy as a hunch, but we need hard evidence. We can’t arrest someone on a gut feeling.”
“Chad’s been gone from Elmsworth for nearly twenty years,” Aaron continued. “God only knows what he’s been up to, who he’s met. But somehow, he seems to know everything about what’s going on here.”
Evadne shook her head, rubbing her aching forehead as memories she’d rather forget came flooding back. “When Avery locked me up on Rose Island, I overheard him talking on the phone about that drug Thaddeus was taking. Avery sounded downright deferential, calling the guy ‘Sir.’ Whoever was behind Avery, the one pulling the strings, making him run those human experiments and control the Chambers Group—that’s the ‘Sir’ he was talking to.
That guy clearly knew his way around pharmaceuticals, and Chad… Chad’s got major connections in the biotech world back in the States.
