A shockwave shot through Mr. Murray, a chill spreading through his entire body.
He’d often heard Mr. Frederic describe Ms. Ashbourne as a force to be reckoned with, but he'd never truly believed it until now. Before him stood a true daughter of Emeric Ashbourne, possessing the same regal bearing and oppressive aura that could make even the strongest men bow their heads.
“Ms. Ashbourne… what is it that you want?” Mr. Murray asked, his voice trembling.
Evadne Ashbourne’s expression was grim. “Murray, besides my grandfather, you must have been the only other person who knew about what Chad did all those years ago. I want to know how that girl really died. And how did you and Grandfather dispose of her body?”
Mr. Murray clenched his jaw, saying nothing.
“If you won’t tell me,” Evadne continued, her tone dangerously calm, “it’s only a matter of time before I find out myself. With my resources and the power of the Ashbourne family, it won’t be difficult.” A faint, mirthless smile touched her lips. “And if I have to uncover it myself, there’s no telling which way things will go.”
“Ms. Ashbourne, this is a grave matter!” Mr. Murray pleaded, on the verge of tears. “This concerns Mr. Frederic and the reputation of the entire Abernathy family! If this gets out, the whole group will be thrown into chaos! Mr. Frederic’s health is declining by the day. How could he possibly withstand the fallout if the Abernathy Group collapses?”
Evadne’s gaze was sharp and unyielding. “Grandfather trusts and adores me. In my heart, he is as important to me as my own father. I will handle this with care and ensure no harm comes to him.”
After a long, agonizing silence, Mr. Murray squeezed his eyes shut and finally spoke.
“It was a knife.”
“How many times? Once? Twice?”
“More than a dozen… the neck, chest, abdomen… I can’t remember the exact number. All I remember is that her body was covered in stab wounds. Her blood soaked the entire carpet red.”
A wave of nausea and rage washed over Evadne, and she drew a sharp, ragged breath. It was impossible to reconcile the image of the polished, well-mannered Chad Abernathy with such a monstrous, psychopathic killer.
“Chad is, after all, Mr. Frederic’s eldest grandson,” Mr. Murray continued, his body slumping back against the seat as if drained of all strength. “It’s impossible for a grandfather to choose. Mr. Frederic had no choice but to do everything in his power to bury it. I cleaned the crime scene and burned the blood-soaked carpet. We staged the girl’s body to look like a suicide—a fall from a building. Then, through a network of connections, we obtained a death certificate and had her body sent to the crematorium as quickly as possible.”
The rest, Evadne already knew. Her eyes were bloodshot, her chest tight with a furious hatred. Chad was unforgivable, but what about her grandfather? He had protected his grandson, callously erasing a vibrant life. How could she ever face that kind, loving old man again?
“Ms. Ashbourne, please, rest assured,” Mr. Murray said desperately. “Mr. Frederic will do everything he can to secure Mr. Thaddeus’s position in the family. Even if Chad makes a full recovery, he will never be the heir to the Abernathy Group! Mr. Frederic’s shares and entire inheritance will go to Mr. Thaddeus!” He added, “Grandfather saw Chad’s true nature long ago. He feared him and kept him at a distance, all while grooming Thaddeus. It wasn’t just out of genuine affection; it was also to give his younger grandson a fighting chance, to protect him from Chad’s eventual retaliation.”
