…
In the hotel’s rear garden, Thaddeus stumbled to a halt by a frozen pond, gasping for air as if he were drowning. His body trembled as he bent down, grabbing a handful of snow and squeezing it tightly. The biting cold seeped into his skin but did nothing to quell the throbbing pain in his temples.
His eyes were bloodshot. He shoved the snow into his mouth and swallowed it whole.
It wasn't working. It wasn’t enough…
He needed the pills.
“Mr. Abernathy? What are you doing out here?”
Alexia’s surprised voice came from behind him.
Thaddeus froze, his hand clenching the snow, veins bulging. He slowly straightened and turned to face her.
“Just getting some air,” he said, his voice raspy.
Alexia’s eyes narrowed, taking in his appearance. “Mr. Abernathy, you look terrible. Are you not feeling well?”
“I’m fine.” A bead of sweat traced a path down his handsome face.
“Mr. Abernathy, if you’ve run out of your medication, you must tell me,” Alexia said, her gaze fixed on him as she took a step closer. “You need to take it on schedule, or your headaches will never get better. Over time…”
Thaddeus closed his bloodshot eyes, cutting her off abruptly.
“I’m much better. I don’t need it for now.”
A flicker of malice crossed Alexia’s face, quickly replaced by a gentle smile. She reached out and patted his shoulder.
Thaddeus’s brow furrowed, and he turned back to her. They stood face to face, so close that her warm breath misted in the cold air, nearly touching his chin.
