Chapter 136
When she saw me come down beside Liam, her smile thinned, the kind people wear when they’d rather bare their teeth.
“Why is she coming with us?” she asked him.
Liam walked right past her without so much as a glance. “If you really want to make it to your appointment, Cassie, meet us outside.”
1 let my lips curl into the kind of smile that promised trouble. You really thought I’d leave you alone with my man? Not happening.
Cassie’s reply was a cool, tight–lipped smile of her own. Enjoy it while you can.
The hospital visit was handled with care. We arrived in separate cars, separate entrances.
Liam’s name carried enough weight that we skipped the waiting area entirely and went straight to the private wing.
Inside the dim scan room, the doctor prepped the machine, the cool gel slick against Cassie’s skin. I stayed beside Liam, my hand hooked through his arm, feeling the tension vibrating under his jacket
It was written all over him- jaw tight, shoulders locked, eyes fixed anywhere but the screen.
This wasn’t just discomfort for him, it was torture. He’d rather be stuck in traffic, sitting through a board meeting, hell, even trapped at an amusement park on the hottest day of summer than be
here.
The doctor adjusted the probe, his eyes on the screen. “There are two gestational sacs,” he said finally. “You’re carrying twins.”
Cassie’s head snapped toward Liam, her voice bright with triumph. “Did you hear that? Twins,
Liam.”
He didn’t even glance at her. His gaze was fixed on me.
I caught the flicker on Cassie’s face, her smile faltering, gaze tightening like she’d just swallowed

a mouthful of vinegar.
“I wish it was us.” I whispered before I could stop myself.
“It will be.” he murmured, his hand finding the back of my neck, pulling me onto his shoulder.
Cassie shifted on the bed, the rustle of paper under her an unspoken protest, but in that moment, the rest of the room faded.
The doctor gave his list of instructions. No heavy lifting, watch your diet, follow–up in four weeks, then dismiss us.
Cassie slid off the exam table, smoothing her dress. “Guess I’ll need someone strong around to help me… someone committed.” Her eyes lingered on Liam before flicking to me with a sugary
smile.
We left the same way we came, with Liam going first and Cassie and I hanging back to avoid
attention.
She was scrolling through her phone when it buzzed with a new message. My eyes caught it before my brain told me not to look.
I need to see you.
Her reply was quick.
I told you to wait. If you mess this up for me, I won’t forgive you.
Then she remembered I was standing right there and locked her phone like it could erase what I’d already seen.
Too late.
Our eyes met in a silent, loaded stare.
I broke it first. “You really should be more careful with your phone. Wouldn’t want the wrong person seeing the wrong thing… again.”
Then I walked out.
We parted ways outside the hospital. Cassie left in her own car. Liam headed to the office, and I made my way to the studio.

Chapter 136
By the time I got home that night, exhaustion pressed into my bones. I stood in the kitchen, unwrapping one of the chocolates Liam always kept stocked for me. My one small comfort that never seemed to run out.
The square softened in my palm before I remembered to take a bite. I was still leaning on the counter when Cassie’s voice slid in from the doorway.
“Oh, you’re back.”
I inhaled slowly, bracing.
Cassie strolled in with the slow satisfaction of someone who’d just spotted her target.
“The other day you said you pitied me. Cute. But between us? You’re the one who needs it. Playing the supportive little shadow, going to scans with me and the father of my babies.”
She wandered over to the counter, reached for the jug, and poured herself a glass of juice with the slow confidence of someone certain she was in control.
“So tell me. What’s next? Delivery room? Helping with the diaper change?”
My fingers tightened around the square of chocolate until it bent, the softened edges leaking against my skin. I didn’t lift my eyes. My voice stayed locked in my throat, too tired to let her in, too aware that if I spoke, I might not stop.
Her laugh was low and cruel. “That’s all you’ll ever be. Watch me live what you never will.”
