Chapter 158
Laura and Sophia weren’t much help. Laura, if anything, looked secretly delighted to have me stuck under her roof.
By the fourth night, I was restless. I video called Liam, who was still in England, and poured out my frustrations.
“Your father is worse than you,” I lamented.
He chuckled, tossing in questions here and there to distract me, but when I pressed for an update, the light in his smile dimmed.
“So far, nothing concrete. Leo’s useless, and the old crowd didn’t even realize Cassie had been back in England. I’ll keep pushing for answers… then I’ll come home.‘
“I miss you,” I whispered. “But please, tell me how to get your father to listen to me.”
Liam laughed again. “Tell him you’re bored. That you need something to do.”
I promised to try.

The next morning, over breakfast, I took a breath and told Henry, “I’m bored.”
He looked at me, his expression easing. “You cook, don’t you? Why not use the kitchen? Keep yourself busy with something you enjoy.”
Laura chimed in at once. “I’ll help! And Sophia too.”
I opened my mouth to protest, but Henry’s lips twitched, fighting a smile. “You’ll need better help than those two.”
Laura shot her husband a glare. Watching the exchange, I realized maybe this could actually be fun.
“Alright then… let’s do it.”
Henry tapped my shoulder before leaving for work. “Good luck.”
I didn’t understand the weight of those words until later.

Laura was the one who woke me from my nap, practically bouncing with excitement. Sophia dragged her feet, grumbling, but followed us into the kitchen.
It didn’t take long for the kitchen to descend into pure comedy.
Sophia tried to guide Laura’s hand, adjusting her grip on the knife. “No, no, like this. You’re going to cut your fingers off holding it that way.”
Laura batted her hand away. “Excuse me? I’ve been around kitchens longer than you’ve been alive.”
Sophia arched a brow. “Being around a kitchen isn’t the same as actually cooking in one.”
“That’s rich coming from you Sophia.”
They bickered like rival chefs in a cooking show gone wrong, each insisting they knew better, while the cutting board remained a battlefield of uneven onions and half–mangled carrots.
I leaned against the counter, laughing so hard my stomach hurt, wondering if Henry had set me up on purpose by suggesting this.
At one point, I was doubled over, recording the disaster on my phone, when a laugh I knew too well echoed from the doorway.
I turned, almost dropping the phone.
Liam.
Grinning like the devil himself.
“I just spoke to you hours ago!” I exclaimed, rushing into his arms without thinking. “You didn’t say you were coming back!”
I kissed him before I remembered we weren’t alone.
Laura’s voice floated from behind us, amused. “Just like when Jay used to live here. My eyes are still scarred from the things I saw then.”
My face burned as I pulled back, realizing his mother and Sophia were both watching.
Their laughter chased me as I ran from the kitchen, my face on fire.

insisted I stay here for protection, he was still laughing.

I shot him a glare, pulling the blanket higher. “You caused that. If you’d told me you were coming back, I wouldn’t have made a fool of myself in the kitchen.”
He leaned against the doorframe, eyes glinting. “Em, it’s nothing. Like my mother said, she’s seen worse. Jay made sure of that.”
“I still can’t picture Jay that way, even after Sophia told me his stories.
“Don’t let the personality fool you,” Liam said dryly. “Jay belongs to the streets.‘
That broke me. I laughed so hard my sides ached.
Liam’s mouth curved with mischief. “When he wanted to move out, my parents begged him to go. With Sophia, they begged her to stay. But Jay? They practically shoved him out the door. He was tormenting them.”
More laughter bubbled up, and I had to bury my face in the pillow to muffle it.
But when the laughter faded, I asked quietly, “When do we go back home?”
He paused, his gaze softening. “Home,” he repeated. “I like how you say that.”
“Don’t get cheesy,” I warned. “You’re still under punishment.”
He chuckled, but then his expression shifted. “You’ll stay here. With my parents.”
The smile vanished from my face. “Excuse me?” I said, my voice sharper than I intended.
The truth was, I’d been waiting for him to come back so we could finally leave. I could handle Liam. I knew how to bend his rules if I had to. But Henry? He was unshakable.
