He nodded enthusiastically. “Yes! Mommy is good at cooking. Sometimes we eat grilled fish with tomato sambal, or fish soup that tastes amazing. It’s just as good as this restaurant, Grandma.” He scooped up another piece of crab that Daven had placed in his bowl. “Oh, but my favorite is Mommy’s cheesy lasagna. She makes it just for me.”
Kate’s lips curved into a gentle smile, though a faint ache bloomed in her chest at his words. “Your mother must be an extraordinary woman.”
“Of course,” Josh replied with pure pride, his eyes shining. “I love everything Mommy makes. Even her simple fried rice tastes incredible. She always tells me the best food is the kind cooked with love. Would you like to try it, Grandma? If you do, I’ll ask Mommy to make some for you, so you can taste it.”
Kate’s smile wavered into something bittersweet. “That won’t be necessary, sweetheart.”
But inside, her thoughts drifted seven years back. She remembered all the time Althea had prepared meal after meal for the Callister family. Dishes are carefully cooked, though often dismissed, mocked, or left untouched by her and her daughters. Althea had tried to win their hearts through the simplest form of love—food.
And now here was Josh, her grandson, proudly cherishing those very meals.
The thought hit her hard. What would Josh feel if he ever learned that in the past, Kate had scorned and discarded the meals his mother had poured her heart into? The image that rose in her mind was unbearable—Josh’s bright smile and sparkling eyes dimming into sorrow, all because of the way she had once treated Althea.
Meanwhile, Josh kept chattering away—about his friends at kindergarten who always praised his lunch and wanted to trade for it, about ‘Daddy’ Chase who had dinner with them almost every night and always cleaned his plate, and about all the fun little things he shared with his mom.
Daven lowered his gaze, letting Josh talk on. Each word felt like a sting, but at the same time, it filled him with a deep admiration for Althea.
“Um… Grandma,” Josh said hesitantly.
“Yes? What is it, Josh? Do you need something?”
Josh grinned sheepishly. “Could you help me peel this shrimp?” He pointed to the honey-glazed shrimp glistening on the platter. “I can’t get the shell off.”
Kate chuckled softly. “Of course. Come here, let me help you.” Her hands moved deftly as she peeled the shrimp and placed it neatly on Josh’s small plate.
“Thank you, Grandma!” Josh popped it into his mouth, his eyes sparkling. “Wow, this is so good. Sweet and juicy.”
