Kalina scoffed. “Don’t be so dramatic, Felicia. You know exactly why we rejected her. That marriage was nothing but duty. Daven only married her out of responsibility, not love. If you look back at the past, you know who Daven truly loved. Vanessa Blake. And we supported that relationship, didn’t we?”
“You’re right.” Felicia didn’t deny it—she couldn’t. “But you also need to remember why Althea ended up in this house in the first place.”
“That was because of Grandmother Eve and her ridiculous demands. Daven was forced to take responsibility for Althea’s mother’s death. If Grandmother Eve had simply given her a proper settlement, that woman would never have become part of this family.” Kalina’s eyes narrowed with irritation. “So why are you bending over backwards to defend her?”
“Responsibility?” Felicia repeated, her voice bitter. “If that’s what it was, then we should have supported Althea more. Her mother died in an accident tied to Daven. That should have made us protective of her, not cast her aside like some burden. Tell me, is that what family does?”
“And weren’t you part of it too?” Kalina shot back with a sneer. “You don’t get to defend her now when you were just as guilty of throwing her out.”
“Exactly because I was part of it.” Felicia’s voice didn’t waver. “I admit my mistakes, and I do regret them—deeply.”
“Enough,” Kate cut in sharply. “There’s no point digging up the past. At the time, we all believed Vanessa was far more suited to stand beside Daven. Althea—”
“Vanessa?” Felicia sliced through the name like a blade. “You still dare say her name as if she were some angels, Mom? After everything? Wasn’t it you who suffered the most because of her? How many years have it been since Vanessa and this family fell apart? She wasn’t the saint we thought she was, was she?”
Kalina fell silent, her jaw tightening. Kate didn’t answer right away either, her head bowing as if she were searching for the right words.
Felicia pressed on, her voice heavy with conviction. “Althea proved herself. The woman we once dismissed managed to stand on her own. She worked, she struggled, she raised a child without anyone’s help. That child is part of this family. And us? What have we done, aside from casting her out and tearing her down?”
Kalina couldn’t take it anymore. Her voice rose, sharp and cutting. “You’re just guilty, Felicia—softened by pity. But facts don’t change she hid Mommy’s grandchild. She hid my nephew. And that was wrong!”
“Wrong?” Felicia shot back, her tone unflinching. “Or was she only protecting herself from us? Think, Kalina. If she had walked back here five years ago carrying that baby, asking us to acknowledge him—what would we have done? We would’ve rejected her outright. You know that’s true. Admit it. We probably would’ve humiliated her even more.”
