Felicia’s breath hitched. She hadn’t expected the rejection to be this sharp, this absolute.

“Feli—” Daven started, but before he could finish, Felicia lifted a hand, signaling him to stay silent.

She drew in a deep breath, forcing herself to smile despite the daggers in Althea’s eyes, despite the hostility radiating from her every glance. She wasn’t used to being treated this way. The sting was unbearable, as if Althea truly saw her as someone beneath her—someone unworthy.

“I truly am sorry, Althea. I hurt you. I trampled on your sincerity, your very existence… and so much more that I don’t even have the courage to put into words. I regret it all.”

Her head bowed, her shoulders trembling with the weight of remorse. Nothing on her face could hide the depth of her regret now, not from Althea.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “But please, let me stay. Let me be here with you today. At least until I know how Josh is doing.”

Althea said nothing.

“I believe Josh is strong. Your love for him will guide him back to us.” Felicia shifted a little closer. “Maybe my words sound hollow to you right now, but… don’t worry, Althea. I’m certain the doctors will do everything they can. And the whole way here, I prayed to God that Josh would return to you—his family.”

Now sitting right beside Althea, Felicia felt a flicker of relief. Althea hadn’t pushed her away. That had to mean something, didn’t it? It was more mercy than she had expected, and it eased a weight she hadn’t realized she was carrying.

That small grace gave her courage. She reached out and clasped Althea’s hand tightly.

“Josh will make it through. Let’s pray together, that God will answer us. Will you?”
