Kate fell silent, her eyes widening.
“At this moment, Althea is being tested to see if her blood type matches Josh’s.”
“Then what are we waiting for?” Kate shot to her feet. “Let’s find the doctor and test mine too, to make sure your memory isn’t wrong. But I’m certain—my blood matches Josh’s. Take it. However much he needs. I don’t care. I’ll give it all. For my grandson.”
“Mommy, listen to me.” Felicia’s gaze held hers, steady but urgent. She fought to keep her voice calm. “You’re not young anymore. Donating could put you at risk. I don’t want you to push yourself.”
Kate clasped both her daughter’s hands tightly, her voice trembling but resolute. “No risk matters, Felicia. Josh’s life is worth more. Don’t let it be too late.”
Felicia shut her eyes, then gave a small nod. “All right. If that’s truly your decision, I’ll call the nurse right away.”
Kate drew in a deep breath, trying to calm her racing heart. “Thank you, God! You’ve given me a chance to make amends, even if just a little. I only want one thing… for Josh to come back to us. Don’t take him away.”
Felicia hugged her again, more gently this time, as though steadying them both. “I’m so grateful you’re here, Mommy. Without you, I think I would’ve lost all hope.”
A nurse hurried in after being called. “Ma’am, are you the donor?”
Kate nodded firmly, though her cheeks were streaked with tears. “Yes. Do it quickly. Don’t waste time.”
“Very well. Please come with me for a brief test first,” the nurse said, her tone professional yet kind.
Kate turned to Felicia before moving. “Don’t worry. I’m strong. Tell Althea… I won’t ask for anything in return. I only want to save that child.”
Felicia gripped her mother’s hand, grounding her. “I’ll tell her. Trust me, Mommy… this will change everything. At least Josh will have a chance to stay with us.”
They walked briskly toward the examination room; Kate’s steps unsteady yet filled with determination. Just then, Chase and Daven entered almost at the same time. Both men froze when they saw Kate.
“Mom,” Daven’s voice cracked, caught between shock and relief. “You… you’re here?”
Kate gave a quick nod. “There’s so much I want to say, but something far more important needs to be done first. Wait for me, Daven.”
Daven frowned in confusion, trying to make sense of her words. His eyes shifted to Felicia, who was twisting her hands together anxiously.
“What’s going on?”
