A nurse hurried out from behind the door, her face tight with worry. “Is there a family member of Mrs. Kate Callister here?”
Daven and Felicia instantly rose to their feet. “Yes, we are,” Felicia answered quickly, confusion flickering in her eyes. “She’s, my mother.”
The nurse gave a small bowl, her voice low and serious. “Mrs. Kate’s condition is rather concerning. Her blood pressure spiked dangerously after she donated blood. She fainted and is now under special care.”
“What?!” Daven’s face drained of color, disbelief etched in his voice. “Mommy? She fainted?”
Felicia slapped a trembling hand over her mouth, tears welling in her eyes. “Oh God… Mommy.”
Althea froze where she stood, her chest tightening with guilt.
“Was it… because she donated for Josh? Did Mrs. Kate’s condition get worse because of that?”
“You could say so,” the nurse replied gently. “But more than that—Mrs. Callister pushed herself too hard. I believe she loves her grandson deeply. It would be best if the family stayed with her for a while. She’s being cared for by another doctor now.”
“Very well,” Daven cut in immediately. “Take us to her.”
“But how is Mommy right now?” Felicia pressed, already moving to follow the nurse.
“We’re still monitoring her closely. Now, Mrs. Kate has regained consciousness, but she needs plenty of rest.”
“Can we see her?” Daven asked, his face tight with worry.
“You may, but please, not for long. Her condition is still fragile.”
Daven and Felicia hurried down the hall toward Kate’s room, while Chase and Althea chose to remain behind in the corridor, already thinking about the next steps for finding additional donors. Arsen, unusually, didn’t follow his employer this time.
“I hope Mrs. Callister will be all right,” Arsen muttered, his attention shifting back to his tasks.
Felicia, meanwhile, bit her lower lip again and again, nerves gnawing at her with every step. Worry for her mother weighed heavier than anything else.
“Here,” the nurse said softly, stopping before a door and opening it.
Inside, Kate lay stretched on the bed, her face pale, her eyes closed in exhausted slumber.
“She’s still resting,” the nurse explained. “But her condition is much better than before.”
“Thank you,” Daven breathed, relief flickering across his features as he saw his mother safe.
It didn’t take long before Kate’s eyelids fluttered open. Weak and weary, she still managed a faint smile at the sight of her children at her side.
“Mom…” Felicia rushed to her, clasping her mother’s hand tightly. “You nearly scared me to death.”
“What’s wrong with me now?” Kate scoffed, though her voice was faint. “Oh, Josh—how is he? Has the doctor given you an update? I need to know about my grandson.”
She tried to push herself upright, but her entire body felt like lead. Even lifting her hand seemed impossible, every ounce of strength drained. A sharp wave of dizziness hit her, forcing her back against the pillows.
“Ugh…” Kate groaned.
Daven stepped closer, gently helping Kate sit up. “Mom… you shouldn’t have pushed yourself like that.”
Kate’s gaze locked with her son’s, unwavering despite her frailty. “Daven, listen to me. If it’s for my grandson, there’s nothing to regret. I’d do it all over again if I had to.”
