HIS REGRET (Ex-Husband wants Me Back) novel Chapter 296

**Shadows of the Past – By Emma Clarke**
**Chapter 296**

Mighatan – A month had slipped by since Josh and Althea returned to SunCity.

“Mr. Daven,” Arsen’s voice was barely above a whisper as he rapped gently on the office door, the sound echoing slightly in the quiet corridor outside.

Daven lifted his gaze, the weariness of his soul evident in the dullness of his eyes, which were obscured by a mountain of untouched documents that had become a familiar sight in his office. “Come in, Arsen,” he replied, his voice flat and devoid of energy. The atmosphere in the room was stifling, thick with a silence that seemed to absorb every ounce of warmth, leaving behind an oppressive chill.

Yet, despite the heaviness that enveloped him, he knew he could not afford to pause. As the CEO of Callister Group, he was the linchpin for countless lives, the man whose decisions rippled through the lives of so many. Work—cold, mechanical, and unending—was the only refuge he had left, a way to escape the turmoil that churned within him.

Arsen stepped inside, holding a brown folder tightly in one hand and an elegant white envelope in the other. “These are the investment reports from the western branch,” he said, his tone professional yet cautious. He placed the envelope delicately on the desk, as if it were a fragile artifact. “And… this is an invitation, sir. From Mr. Chase Miller and Miss Althea Grayson.”

In that moment, time seemed to freeze.

Daven’s gaze locked onto the envelope, a pristine white adorned with gold embossing that glinted under the harsh office lights. His name was inscribed neatly in the lower corner: Mr. Daven Callister.

The mere sight of his name sent a tightness through his chest, a reminder of all that had transpired and all that had been lost.

“Mr. Miller delivered it personally,” Arsen continued, his voice dropping to a near whisper, as if he were treading on fragile ground. “He mentioned it was out of respect for your longstanding business partnership, and… for the good relationship you’ve shared over the years.”

“A good relationship, is it?” Daven leaned back in his chair, his eyes still fixed on the envelope, which felt like a weight he couldn’t lift. “Funny, isn’t it? I wonder where that so-called good part came from.”

Arsen remained silent, fully aware that Daven wasn’t seeking an answer.

After what felt like an eternity, Daven finally reached for the invitation, his fingers trembling slightly as he opened the envelope and unfolded the crisp card nestled within.

Chase Miller & Althea Grayson.
