**Shadows of the Past – By Emma Clarke**
**Chapter 310**
“I’m just waiting for his message. He always texts me right after he lands,” Althea murmured, her voice barely above a whisper, as if the very act of speaking might summon the words she longed to hear.
“Don’t overthink it,” Lydia replied, her tone soothing as she reached out to give Althea’s hand a gentle pat. “Chase loves you. He made sure you felt that before he left. I’m certain he’s perfectly fine.”
Althea managed a faint nod, but inside, her heart beat erratically, refusing to find peace. With a heavy sigh, she rose from the couch, the weight of her worry almost palpable as she made her way to Josh’s room. The sight that met her was one of pure innocence: her little boy, lost in the realm of dreams, clutching the white bunny plush that Chase had gifted him just before the trip.
“I love Daddy,” Josh mumbled, his voice soft and muffled against the plush toy, the words striking Althea’s heart like a bolt of lightning. She brushed her fingers gently through his tousled hair, a bittersweet smile gracing her lips. “I know, sweetheart. Mommy knows you love Daddy.”
Just as she turned to leave the room, her phone buzzed violently, the sudden vibration slicing through the stillness of the night like a knife. She flinched, her heart racing, and answered the call without glancing at the caller ID.
Her brow furrowed at the sight of an unfamiliar number, but she forced herself to remain calm, pushing back the rising tide of anxiety. “Hello? Chase?” she called out, her voice laced with hope.
Yet, the voice that responded was not the familiar warmth she craved. Instead, a deep, authoritative tone resonated through the line. “Is this Mrs. Althea Grayson?”
Althea felt her breath hitch, her heart pounding like a drum in her ears. “Yes, this is she. What’s going on?”
“This is Captain Reynolds from the SunCity Aviation Authority. I’m calling to inform you—” He paused, the weight of his words hanging heavily in the air. “The aircraft, flight SC-927, carrying Mr. Chase Miller and the other passengers, has gone missing from radar approximately two hours ago.”
In that moment, time seemed to freeze for Althea. “W-what do you mean, missing?” she stammered, disbelief clouding her mind.
“We’ve launched a search operation over the Mediterranean airspace. The last contact with the pilot occurred just minutes before the plane encountered a severe storm system.”
