Lumina looked at him in surprise. “How did you know?”
“I more or less figured it out,” Soren replied, his tone calm as he lowered his gaze. “The first time I took you horseback riding, I noticed how protective you were of your abdomen. That made me suspicious. Then, at Cedric’s birthday party, you kept sipping juice all night and didn’t touch a drop of alcohol. That’s when I was certain.”
Lumina hadn’t realized how closely he’d been watching her, picking up on even the smallest details she thought had gone unnoticed.
She lowered her lashes, voice barely above a whisper. “So why didn’t you ask me about it?”
He offered a faint smile. “That kind of thing isn’t really my place to ask. I figured, when you were ready to open up to me, you’d tell me yourself.”
Lumina pressed her lips together and fell silent, absently spearing a piece of broccoli with her fork and chewing slowly.
The quiet between them stretched on, heavy and unbroken.
It was a long time before Lumina finally spoke, her voice low. “I’m not planning to terminate the pregnancy. I want to keep the baby.”
Soren nodded, unruffled, and continued eating, his expression as steady as ever.
“And…how do you feel about that?” she ventured.
Only then did Soren look up, meeting her gaze for a long moment.
Across the table, Lumina stared back at him, her round, clear hazel eyes wide and earnest, lips parted as if she barely dared to breathe.
Soren broke into a sudden, gentle smile. “Worried I’d mind? Don’t be. I’m not bothered. When it comes to feelings, I just follow my heart. If I want to be good to you, then I’m ready to take on whatever that means.”
Lumina’s hand tightened a little around her napkin.
“The child is yours,” Soren continued quietly, his eyes lowering. “Whatever you decide to do, I won’t interfere, and it won’t change how I feel about you.”
His words were so sincere, Lumina could tell he wasn’t just saying them out of politeness.
“So, relax and eat,” he added softly. “This really isn’t a big deal to me.”
He glanced down and chuckled, almost to himself. “But I am curious—why so serious today? What made you want to talk to me about this all of a sudden?”
That admission caught Lumina off guard, her eyes widening in surprise.
He shook his head and laughed. “My mother and Cedric’s mother came from very different backgrounds. My father never groomed me to be his successor—he always let me go my own way. So I’m perfectly happy running my ranch and living life how I want. That’s the life I’ve always wanted. You don’t need to worry—I’m not Cedric. And if you’d rather not go back to Banyan Town, I’d be just as happy staying here with you.”
Lumina dabbed her mouth with her napkin, but couldn’t help smiling. “What, you’d give up your ranch? That’s easy to say.”
He met her gaze, warm and steady. “It’s just a possession. Whether I keep it or not is up to you.”
Lumina returned to her meal in silence, murmuring her agreement.
As they neared the end of dinner, Soren seemed to remember something, speaking up as if casually, “By the way, I know an OB-GYN in Yuria—she’s pretty well regarded. If you’re free after work tomorrow, I can take you to see her?”
Lumina shook her head lightly, unconcerned. “That’s okay. The doctor I’m seeing now—Dr. Wendy—is really good.”
Soren nodded, but gently insisted, “Pregnancy isn’t something to take lightly. It’s best to have a doctor you know personally. If anything comes up, it’s much easier to get help.”
Lumina thought he had a point. He’d always taken care of things for her in Yuria, so she nodded. “Alright.”
