Chapter 39
Georgia’s mind drifted, lost in memory, deaf to Laura’s sharp words.
“Georgia, you just called me mean, now you’re going to pretend you don’t hear me?”
Laura’s voice cut through the haze, mixed with Georgia’s panicked cry.
A loud bang echoed.

Georgia stumbled, her head smashing against the doorknob. She gasped, spinning to see Laura’s shocked face.
Blood trickled down her forehead, the world blurring into a crimson haze.
Laura’s eyes widened in fear.
What had happened?
“It’s not my fault! It’s not my fault! You weren’t steady. It’s not my fault!” Georgia’s vision blurred further, the last thing she
saw was Laura rushing out in panic.
Confusion flooded her as darkness crept in. What was going on with Laura?
“Charlotte, I need to ask for leave.”
Georgia’s words slipped from her lips in a drowsy murmur, her thoughts tangled and unclear.
Footsteps approached in a rush. Someone appeared, gasping for breath.
“It’s not my fault. She was too weak. I just touched her, and she fell.”
Laura returned, panting, eyes locked on Georgia’s prone form and the blood marring her forehead. She pulled out her phone, ready to call an ambulance.
But then hesitation halted her. The call was cut off without a word.
