I Bought the exiled king (by Natalie Winter) novel Chapter 49

Chapter 49

Martin howled, but I only ran faster and deeper into the forest.

I didn’t mud the stones digging into my heels or the thoms and branches hitting and sing through my skin.

My legs begaisto hunt and my lungs felt as if they were in fine. I kept looking behind me and festing that anytime Marlin would hange at me.

I was not used to running or doing much physical activity because I had spent all my days in the office, head buried in files.

And now I was blaming myself for being slow, for being weak, and for not being able to save myself from monsters, like Martin..

Somewhere, for the first time ever since I came here, I felt the need to be able to do some kind of magic

If I could. Martin wouldn’t be running after me. He would be sunning away

say from me

For the first time, I tried to desperately find that connection to my witch ancestor, Morwenna.

If there was some mage in me, I wanted it to flare to life and help me in protecting myself

Desperation and panic was making my brain doggy, along with a voice in my head that if I passed out, Martin and his cronies would find

The gown I had loved to be in suddenly felt too heavy and my eyes were starting to close. I didn’t bother to examine the numerous cuts and bruises on my body as I kept running until I couldn’t anymore and stumbled across a rock, falling face down in the ground

willed my body to move

to move, but it wouldn’t, I was totally exhausted.

Stone and mud were sticking in my skin and when I tried to breathe, I inhaled dust that I coughed violently.

Slowly, at an agonizingly slow speed, I managed to turn around and take a few deep b

breaths.

My chest was heaving and my heart wanted to rip itself outside my chest and jump out of my throat.

Water. I needed water,

My throat was dry, and my legs were burning just like the rest of my body.

I gasped and coughed as my lungs fought to pull in more air,

After a few minutes, my breathing finally returned to normal and I could muster some strength to sit upright

And only then did I notice the silence around me.

The forest seemed silent, too quiet for all the parties and noise going at the Seranthyne.

The breeze continued to flow and leaves rustled up in the trees above me. The canopy of trees was huge and barely any moonlight filtered in through the

thick leaves.

I strained my ears to hear the sound of Martin or his men running behind me. But there was no other sound except that of the forest.

Thus, I slowly managed to get up but almost immediately lost my balance. Thankfully, there was a tree nearby that I could hold on to for support.

I gave myself a few more minutes to get my act together and then slowly taking steps forward. I had to find Killian

He would put Martin in his place and maybe even inform the King of how his eldest son and crowned prince treated the blessed one.

wasn’t even sure what direction I had come in through, but I vaguely recalled passing a huge rock that I spotted among the bushes so began moving

ahead in that direction

Chapter 49

The wind was a bit more chilly here than back at the gathering, probably due to the huge bonfire they had lit.

The fire would have been easy to spot earlier, but it had already reduced to embers. I hoped the lanterns would twinkle through the gaps in the leaves to give me an idea of what direction I had to move in.

After walking for almost ten to fifteen minutes, I heard somebody yelling in the forest

Where did she go?

Immediately lowered myself and snuck behind the cover of the bushes. When I peeked from behind the bushes, I saw a low men looking around.

Shit, where is she?I heard Martin’s voice.

I don’t know, we were chasing her and then we somehow lost her

Fabian answered Martin, who gripped his collar and shook him hard.

Find her or it won’t end well for you!Martin growled.

But you drove her away! I was only trying to…”Fabian began to almost cry but Martin slapped him.

-Shut up!

A third person spoke from behind them both.

Forget her! She can’t have gone deep in the forest. Nobody is dumb enough to venture in broad daylight in forest and its night. She will come back running for her life soon enough.

That made all of them cackle, and Martin loosened his hold over Fabian’s shirt,

yeah, if they don’t tear her to pieces, that is, Such a shame it is! I could not even get a taste of her before she died.

I listened to them discuss, my fate in horror.

Fabian looked in the direction I was in and mumbled.

There, I saw something!

He was pointing his finger shakily right in my direction and I scooted down even further, trying to rub dirt and mud all over me

The silver dress must have caught his attention.

I waited with bated breath, wondering if they would come here to investigate.

Martin peered intently at the exact spot I was hiding in.

Go check if she is hiding there

But nobody dared take a step forward.

I am not going to that part of the Forbidden Forest. She is dead either way if she crossed the border, Nobody has returned alive from the Forbidden

zone.”

Was there a bipper evil lurking in these trees?

I vaguely recalled asking Mary if there were wild animals around and she had said that they wouldn’t hurt someone for no reason

Was trespassing their territory reason enough for these wild animals to kill me?

Chapter 49

Shit, I had to escape this forest. Fast,

Thinking quickly, I picked up a rock and throw it to the left, where it thudded against a tree trunk.

That was enough to scare theth as they ran for their lives, and I breathed a sigh of rellot

Now, I could slowly get up and hide in my house, lock the doors, and maybe find Killian in the morning

But then I caught movement to the side and turned to see something shining in the bushes. Something that resembled a big pair of eyes

Though they were entirely red except for little veins that seemed to mimic fire. Those eyes looked like they were pits of hell.

I had never seen anything so terrifying before. I wanted to scream, but my voice seemed to have died down in my throat.

Had whatever wild animals lurked here found me? Was this how I was going to die?
