Chapter 250

Marcus‘ gaze swept across the area and landed on the delicate–looking Kate sitting under the canopy.
He always felt that she deserved all the best things in the world.
Kate stood and walked over. “Marcus, what are you doing here?”
“I’m just hosting someone,” Marcus replied, not planning to introduce Kate to Carter and the others. After all, Kate and Rhea were close.
Kate could see Carter sitting in his wheelchair not far off, accompanied by two women.
She recognized Lauren immediately. The other woman seemed familiar, but the fading light made it difficult to see her clearly from a distance.
“Marcus, you two seem close.” Kate glanced in Carter’s direction.
Standing in the night, Marcus paused for a moment before replying, “It’s just a mutually beneficial relationship.”
Kate wasn’t in business herself, but she wasn’t naive.
“Are you planning to use him against the Ravelles and Sniders?” she asked bluntly.
Marcus frowned. “Kate, this doesn’t concern you.”
Kate held his gaze steadily. “What if I said it does?”
“What do you mean by that?”
The Cain family’s rise in Draventh was primarily attributed to Kate’s father, Connor Pearson. After all, Evie was Marcus‘ mother’s sister.
“I’m Rhea’s best friend. And I…” Kate whispered, “…like George.”
“What?” Marcus‘ eyes widened.
He knew that Evie had been nudging Kate and George toward each other, but he had assumed it was just casual talk.
If Kate actually liked George…
“You know Carter’s character, and you’re still working with him? Plus, Lauren has a complicated past.” This was the first time Kate had spoken about someone behind their back.

Marcus was taken aback.
She warned, “Be careful, Marcus.”
With that, Kate turned and returned to the canopy.
Rhea returned and saw Marcus, but she didn’t greet him. Their parents might play the social game, but they had no reason to pretend.
Marcus‘ expression hardened as he moved to the other side.
“Mr. Cain, did you see someone familiar?” Carter asked.
“Just my cousin,” he replied.
At that moment, a woman nearby smiled and suggested, “Why not invite her to join us?”
That woman was Elena Austin, the only daughter of a jewelry tycoon in Eryham.
She wasn’t the most stunning, but wealth and poise gave her a presence. She was lively and confident, clearly not a naive rich heiress.
“She came with friends. Shall we go inside?”
Elena glanced around. “The view outside looks nice. How about we eat out here, too?”
She was the guest, after all. Carter and Marcus had come here to host her, so naturally, they would go along with her suggestion.
“Sure.”
The staff at the country estate quickly set up seating outside.
Elena sat and scanned her surroundings. “It’s quite a crowd.”
Her gaze unexpectedly paused on someone across from her.
The man’s eyes met hers for a brief two seconds before he turned away indifferently.
Elena raised an eyebrow. If she wasn’t mistaken, that man seemed dismissive, which intrigued her.
Conveniently, her seat gave her a clear view of him.
Not far off, George noticed Nathan spacing out for a moment. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing. One of the women at that round table looks a bit like someone from Eryham,” Nathan replied.
