“Having such a capable and thoughtful friend is certainly a blessing,” Dexter said.
Carter couldn’t afford to offend Dexter. So he said, “Lauren really is thoughtful. I would never abandon her just because she faced some misfortune.”
Dexter raised an eyebrow. “Misfortune? What misfortune?”
Carter’s gaze hardened as he looked at Dexter. “Mr. Hopper, some matters are better left unspoken. It’s beneath you.”
“I didn’t say anything,” Dexter replied, running a hand over his bald head. “I just admire your tolerance. You actually abandoned your wife for a woman like her.”
A woman like her? What was wrong with Lauren?
“What do you mean?” Carter asked.
Dexter was about to answer after washing his hands when Lauren appeared at the men’s restroom entrance and called out, “Carter!”
Dexter wiped his hands, patted Carter on the shoulder, and murmured, “Her skills in bed are unforgettable. At least for me, I’ve missed her for two years. I wish you both happiness.”
Carter’s vision turned red at once.
What did he just say? Didn’t Dexter assault Lauren? What did he mean by “missed her for two years
“?
Dexter walked out of the restroom without sparing Lauren a glance. After all, she had been nothing more than a toy to him.
Lauren felt cold to the bone. “Carter, come out! Or maybe we can leave first. After all, there are others around.”
Carter understood what she meant immediately. He swallowed the rage threatening to shatter him and returned to the private room.
After chatting with Kieran for over an hour, he finally said that they would leave first.
Kieran didn’t mind. After all, Carter was still in a wheelchair.
“There’s no need to see us out. Please, continue your conversation.” Carter politely declined.
Lauren was still shaken. “We’ll get going first, Elena.”
Elena nodded, though she couldn’t understand why Lauren seemed so diffident.

In the car, the air was thick with unspoken tension. Lauren struggled to catch her breath.
Glen noticed the mood and silently stepped on the accelerator.
Carter chain–smoked, one after another.
“Carter…” Lauren’s body trembled. She fought to keep her composure. “What’s wrong? Are your legs in pain?”
Carter gritted his teeth. “Don’t you have something to tell me?”
Lauren drew a breath, looking innocent. “What do you want me to say? Do you still mind that Mr. Hopper-”
“Did he force himself on you? Lauren, are you lying to me?” Carter demanded loudly.
Dexter had indeed said something.
Lauren wanted to tear him apart with her own hands.
On second thought, Dexter probably wouldn’t dare reveal everything. If he did, he wouldn’t be able to explain it to his wife.
Lauren tried to calm herself. Her eyes slowly reddened. “What could I do? He assaulted me. I was the
victim, yet in his eyes, it’s always my fault. He might even claim I seduced him.”
Carter suddenly chuckled, and Lauren’s heart skipped a beat.
“He didn’t say that. He praised you instead.”
Praised her?
Lauren’s face went pale.
The things Dexter praised her for most were her seductiveness and her skills in bed.
Carter grabbed her face sharply. “He said he’s missed you for two years! Why would he miss you? You’ve slept with him before, haven’t you? You told me that you hadn’t been with any man since leaving me!”
“I…” In a mix of fear and panic, Lauren’s tears welled up and rolled down her cheeks.
Carter roared, “Answer me!”
