Chapter 264
Lauren’s jaw tightened. She clearly saw the look Devan gave her. It was full of displeasure, even bordering on hostility.
“Devan!” She struck first. “I’ve always wanted to ask. Why are you so close to Rhea? And why are you contacting her in private?”
Carter was surprised by that revelation. But when he thought about it again, it made sense.
After he married Rhea, Devan was the first butler they had hired. Now that Rhea was gone and the two kids were often under his care, it was only natural that he would contact Rhea if something came up regarding the children.
Noticing Carter’s calm reaction, Lauren pressed on, “Carter, do you remember the news back when we were at Colburn?”
“Yeah.”
“Many of those photos fueling rumors about you and me were taken at home. I’ve always wondered who took them. Devan, I don’t want to assume you were spying for Rhea to drive a wedge between me and Carter. But you can’t aid and abet others,” Lauren said, her expression righteous.
Aid and abet?
Scarlett immediately chimed in, “Exactly! You and Alisha have always disliked Ms. Thayer, causing trouble for her at every turn. And just now, you brought up the phone call. Are you trying to smear her?”
Before Devan could respond, the two of them had already defined his words as an attempt to smear Lauren. And it might even have been at Rhea’s order.
Devan felt a wave of anger. He pinned his hopes on Carter. “Mr. Jamison, I’ve worked here for years. I’ve never had personal motives! Yes, I do contact Mrs. Jamison, but only when I have to consult her about the children. But that has nothing to do with Ms. Thayer’s phone call!”
He continued firmly, “That day, I overheard Ms. Thayer in her room on the phone. She complained that the ten million dollars you gave her was too little. She owed someone three million dollars and used your money to settle the debt. And then-”
Lauren broke out in a cold sweat and shouted, “Stop lying!”
She couldn’t believe that this damned butler had really heard everything!
Carter frowned. “Why stop him?”
He looked back at Devan. “Go on.”

Devan fixed his gaze on Lauren and spoke deliberately. “Then she mentioned some old man overseas who used to give her eight million dollars a month. Most importantly, she called the two children ingrates and referred to them as brats! She even said that if she got pregnant again, the children would have no use! It’s obvious what she is plotting!”
Lauren’s face flushed red, then drained to a pale white. “You’re slandering me! Why do you always question my heart as a mother? Just because the kids are my heart and soul, you assume I have no choice but to endure being slandered?”
Devan smiled. “Whether it’s slander or not, you know the truth. Mr. Jamison, if you don’t believe me, you can check Ms. Thayer’s accounts to see if there is a three–million–dollar transfer.”
That was Carter’s bank card, so he could check the transactions anytime.
“You said that the money was to host Elena.” Carter’s tone was calm, but his gaze was dangerously sharp.
There was too much information in what Devan said—from Carter’s money, to the eight million dollars a month an old man overseas gave her, to the children no longer being of any use.
