Chapter 308
When Carter left the teahouse, his steps were almost unsteady.
Glen helped him into the car. “Mr. Jamison?”
Carter closed his eyes. His voice came out hoarse as he said, “To the private hospital.”
“Understood.”
As Glen drove, Carter’s brow remained furrowed.
All his life, when his parents were alive, he had never truly felt powerless. Even when his family went bankrupt, he had rebuilt himself and faced countless hardships and challenges.
But the overwhelming pressure he felt from Liam left him breathless.
Was that the presence of someone truly at the top?
Carter’s mindset seemed shaken entirely, and he couldn’t recover for a long while. Yet, deep inside, he yearned even more for Liam’s status and authority. Maybe one day, he too could become the next
Liam.
By the time he got out of the car, Carter’s gaze had turned determined.
As long as he could succeed, he could bear any hardship. No one could stand in his way to success. Not even his baby.
In the ward, Lauren was scrolling on her phone and occasionally laughing to herself. She looked completely relaxed. She behaved nothing like a patient whose cancer might be recurring.
Carter hadn’t told her that he was coming, so his sudden entrance startled her.
“Carter?”
Lauren quickly turned off her screen, both surprised and delighted by his visit.
He was paying more attention to her than he ever had before. Clearly, Carter cared about this pregnancy too.
Lauren’s cheeks were flushed with a healthy glow. “Carter, have you eaten yet?”
Carter looked at her. “Your cancer hasn’t come back, has it?”
Lauren’s eyelashes fluttered. “Holly says that it’s still stable, but we have to be cautious. Anyway, I’ve made up my mind. I won’t give up on this baby, no matter what.”

Carter’s gaze swept over her belly. Her pregnancy was less than a month along.
Liam had given him the chance and the time. Now, Carter had to decide between his future and his
baby.
The former came only once. The latter, he could have later.
“Carter, what’s wrong?” Lauren noticed his expression darkening.
He asked, “Lauren, do you care about me? Do you really want me to succeed?”
Her eyes were clear as she said, “Of course! No one in this world wants you to succeed more than I do. It’s just… My abilities are limited, and my family went bankrupt. Otherwise, I’d do everything I could to help you climb higher.”
Carter narrowed his eyes. “Don’t you feel wronged by all this?”
Lauren lowered her head and smiled. “No. Just seeing you makes me happy. I’ll do anything for you.”
Upon hearing that, Carter pressed his lips together. “Lauren, I do need you to do me a favor now.”
“What is it? Oh, right.” Lauren happily brought out a test report. “Carter, look. Holly ran these tests for me. She says that my baby’s indicators are higher than normal. That means that it’ll likely grow tall and strong. It’s definitely a boy.”
Her face was full of excitement and anticipation.
Seeing her like this, Carter couldn’t help but think of Arielle and Adrian at home.
Lauren never showed any concern for them unless he mentioned them. She genuinely had no attachment to them. But he had actually hurt Rhea back then just because Lauren was the kids‘ birth
mother.
Now, Carter felt far less mental weight over what he was about to do.
