The assistant laughed. “Ms. Ravelle has the right to demand that you return the money at any time.”

Lauren’s friends all turned to look at her. Weren’t she and Carter deeply in love? Could it really be that Lauren had used the fact that she had Carter’s twins to force him to stay with her?

Sharon defended Lauren. “Those are just normal gifts between friends. What does that have to do with Carter and Rhea’s shared marital assets? Besides, Lauren is the mother of his two children. It’s perfectly acceptable for Carter to give her financial aid!”

The assistant said, “You can leave the explanations to the judge.”

He wasn’t an expert regarding this matter. He was simply the messenger.

Lauren returned to her senses. She tried to suppress her humiliation as she asked Marcus, “Is this what Carter sent you here to convey?”

She struggled to get even a single word out. Her friends had been envious of her a moment ago, and there she was now, being humiliated in front of everyone.

Lauren was used to being the subject of their envy. How could something like this not make her feel like she had been slapped across the face?

“Yes, it is.” Marcus pondered the situation. “Mr. Jamison is busy dealing with the Ravelle family now, and he’ll probably keep at it until he can convince Ms. Ravelle to reconcile with him. If you have any questions, it would be better for you to wait this out before contacting him.”

That was not part of the message Carter had asked Marcus to pass on. Marcus had added it himself as he believed that someone like Lauren, who couldn’t provide any support, was nothing but a burden under the current circumstances.

Since he had decided to work with Carter, he needed to ensure that the latter kept his distance from

Lauren.

With that, he turned and left.

His assistant followed him. “Mr. Cain, what if Mr. Jamison gets upset over the things you said to Ms. Thayer?”

“If he’s foolish enough to get upset, then I might as well end my partnership with him.” Marcus got into the car. “Lauren has been involved in every mess that has happened lately. She claims to be innocent, but I don’t see it that way. Have someone keep an eye on her for now.”

“Yes, sir.”

Back in Lauren’s hospital room, her friends were secretly mocking her predicament. On the surface, however, they feigned concern.

“Lauren, Mr. Jamison must have his reasons for doing this. You need to understand that he’s just playing along for now. At least he and Rhea are divorced now.”

“That’s right. He can’t afford to let anyone catch him slipping right now. You have to be understanding.”

Lauren gritted her teeth as she tried to keep her expression composed. “I know. I can understand that he’s in a tough spot now.”

“That’s good. Rest well, okay? We should get going.”

The ladies left together.

“Ha! And here I thought she had hit the jackpot. That’s the only reason I came to see her. Turns out it was just a big joke.”

“To think I wasted my time coming to Draventh so early in the morning.”

Lauren and Sharon were the only ones left in the hospital room. Sharon tried to console Lauren. ” Calm down, Lauren. Something must be up with this. How could Carter possibly sue you? It’s more likely that he was pressured into this by that woman. She’s doing this to get back at you!”

Did Carter really have his reasons for this?

Lauren suddenly smiled and took a few deep breaths. “This is fine. Whatever she does to get back at me, I can handle it.”

She couldn’t sit around waiting for trouble to come, though.

“Sharon, contact Elena for me. Drop some hints and maybe mention that I’ve been hospitalized. See if she can come visit me,” she said.

Whether or not Carter had his reasons for doing this, it wouldn’t change the fact that she had been thrown under the bus. She couldn’t allow her reputation to be ruined. Once that happened, she wouldn’t be able to hold her head high anymore.
