George’s words were precise and cold. “You think Rhea acts impulsively and isn’t as emotionally stable or elegant as Kate, so you believe that Kate suits me better. Subconsciously, you think Rhea’s divorce makes her unworthy of me. Also, since the Ravelle family has members in the military and politics, you worry that it might affect our family if something were to happen. Am I right?”

Every point he made matched Cynthia’s thoughts.

Cynthia said, “Since you know-”

“Mom, I’ve worked hard all these years to live the life I want without worrying about others. I’ve achieved that, so I ask you to respect me. I’ll handle anything that comes up with our family. You just enjoy life as the lady of the house.”

George stood and looked at Kate. “Remember what I told you back then?”

That warning–he wanted her decisions never to hurt Rhea.

Kate’s expression remained calm. Her voice was steady as she replied, “I remember. Don’t worry.”

George’s gaze turned cold. “You’ve broken your word. Don’t come here unless necessary.”

“George! Kate is here to visit me! She’s my guest!” Cynthia scolded.

George turned. “But this house is mine now.”

After George left, she comforted Cynthia, “Mrs. Snider, thank you for defending me. But I’m glad that George is protective of Rhea. She was unhappy in her previous marriage, so I’m truly happy that she has George’s love. Please don’t be upset. Some things can’t be forced.”

Once Cynthia returned, Kate got into her car, showing no sign of emotion. She closed her eyes, as if tired. “Let’s go to Aunt Priscilla’s house.”

The driver headed toward the Cain residence. Outside, snow fell again. This year in Draventh, the snow was heavier than usual.

As Kate gazed at the falling snowflakes, her memories drifted back.
