Carter had originally planned to take the kids home for the New Year.

But Marcus had come by earlier in the day and insisted that he stay at his place, promising to discuss the factory project later. Marcus had pledged to help Carter with construction and partnerships, but a string of complications delayed everything

“What’s your plan now?” Carter asked.

Kate looked up. “What do you want to do?”

“Start with her and George’s inappropriate relationship, of course,” Carter replied.

Kate frowned at those words. Her gaze drifted to the two children who were quietly eating.

Carter caught on. “Arielle, Adrian, head to the living room and watch some cartoons on your digital tablet.”

“Okay.” Arielle hurriedly led Adrian away.

But before leaving, the two children exchanged a glance. They had heard Carter earlier.

Once they were gone, Kate said softly, “Be careful what you say around your kids. They’re in first grade now and can already tell right from wrong.”

“It’s fine. So what if they heard it?” Carter shrugged.

Kate’s voice sharpened. “They’re capable of repeating it to Rhea.”

“Them?”

Carter scoffed. “Impossible.”

They were his children, after all. How could they betray him?

Yet, a memory of a prior incident flickered in his mind. However, he pushed it aside.

He completely rejected the idea, thinking that they were too young to understand.

Kate looked at the two kids in the distance.

The Pearson family was on the brink of collapse. She had to salvage the situation by any means necessary.

So, she suggested, “Carter, maybe we should… work together.”

On the sixth day of the new year, George, who had arranged a private plane, picked Rhea up early.

Ruby reminded them. “Be careful out there.”

“Don’t worry, Mrs. Ravelle. I’ll take care of her,” George replied.

Rhea hugged Ruby. “It’s not like I’m not coming back. Come on, cheer up.”

Ruby shook her head. Watching the people in front of her, she said, “Grown–up kids really don’t stay around.”

George and Rhea froze at those words. Then, they saw Nathan working hard to load the luggage into the car himself without any help from the maids.

“What are you doing?” George asked.

George was rendered speechless.

Seeing this, Ruby quietly returned home.

“Who said I was taking you? If you’re going, walk there yourself.” George refused to bring Nathan along.

Nathan protested, “Please, I’m begging you! Let me come with you!”

He was losing his mind.

Elena had said she was coming to see him, and Kieran had already informed Liam. To make matters worse, Liam agreed. With the Eryham jewelry heiress coming to visit, he had no reason to refuse.

So when Liam returned home that afternoon and didn’t see Nathan, he grew annoyed. “Did he run away?”

Ruby shrugged. “Yeah.”

“How could you let him go?”

Ruby said, “You can’t force him. Even if they do end up together, it would only be unfair to the lady. There’s really no need for this.”

She believed in freedom for her children and had no patience for arranged marriages.

“Does Elena have feelings for you?” Rhea asked Nathan on the plane.

Nathan frowned. “Kind of.”

Having grown up together, George couldn’t stand it. “Kind of? She’s going to your house just to see you. Nathan, will you feel sick if you don’t put on a front?”
