By noon, after David got off work, he returned home. Janae told him, “Mrs. Pearson has lung cancer.”

David was surprised. “The Pearson family from Draventh?”

“Who else?”

Karla said, “I haven’t agreed to treat her yet.”

Having just heard Janae talk about her in–laws, she understood that the Pearson family was now at odds with the Ravelle family, and the conflict ran deep.

“Evie has cancer,” David announced.

Ruby gasped. “She’s at your hospital?”

“No. Kate contacted Janae’s cousin, Karla, to ask her to take on the treatment.”

Liam and David exchanged a look. The brothers had the same thought simultaneously.

“Then let’s pick a time and go see her,” Liam said. “Invite the Levines, the Sniders, and those familiar. Let’s all go visit her.”

By 10:00 am on the ninth, most households in Draventh were still in the festive mood. Yet a group of people had already gathered, getting into their cars and heading toward the oncology hospital.

As soon as they arrived at the hospital, news began spreading throughout Draventh.

Within an hour, everyone knew that Evie had cancer, and several families, led by the Ravelle family, had gone to visit her.

Many were surprised, and some were admiring.

Liam smiled. “Your health is most important right now. Rest well. Connor will talk to us.”

Connor immediately gestured. “Please, everyone, follow me.”

The visitors settled in the next room, but Evie still looked uneasy. She asked her maid, “Are you sure there’s only a shadow on my lungs?”
