“Can you save your crying for our wedding day?” George reached for a tissue, trying to calm him.

Nathan felt miserable.

He hadn’t been there for Rhea’s first marriage. And now, hardly after returning home, she was already engaged again. How could he bear to let her go?

He almost wished that Rhea would never marry and just stay at home carefree, living like the cherished daughter she was. As her brother, he could provide for her for the rest of her life.

Frowning, Nathan said solemnly, “If Mrs. Snider gives her the tiniest hard time, I won’t forgive you. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. If that happens, we won’t be friends anymore. You and I will be enemies.

“I will worry.”

But he hoped that Nathan would spare his shirt. This was his second shirt that night. He had nothing left to change into.

Just then, Zayne came over. “George, can I drink with Nathan?”

George nodded and gestured for him to sit.

Suddenly, Liora said, “Zayne, your mom’s asking when you’re going home.”

Zayne turned around. “Don’t bother.”

Liora propped her chin on her hand. “What do you mean?”

“Don’t bother replying.”

At the mention of mother–in–law and daughter–in–law conflicts, Nathan suddenly turned to look at Zayne. “When Liora and your mom were at each other’s throats, was it scary? Do you think Rhea could stand up to Mrs. Snider?”

George was at a loss for words.

Zayne thought for a moment. “She’s not the same.”

“What do you mean?”

Zayne replied, “From what I know of Rhea, she’s not the type who would pin her mother–in–law

down and threaten her.”

At that, Nathan and George both looked across the room at Liora.

Liora’s cheeks were stuffed with pastries, puffed out like a chipmunk’s. She didn’t know that they were talking about her.

George turned around and lowered his voice. “Liora has done that?”

Nathan stared at Zayne. “Why?”

Zayne let out a sigh. “My mom likes to throw her weight around as a mother–in–law. Maybe it’s because my grandma treated her that way when she was younger. Once, she shut Liora out of the house in front of all her friends, leaving her standing there until they finished their supper and went

home.”

George’s gaze shifted.

Zayne hurried to explain. “I wasn’t home then! I only heard about it afterward.”

George’s lips curved into a calm smile. “And then?”

“And then Liora walked back into the house without saying a single word. She dismissed all the staff. And once no one else was around, she suddenly pinned my mom to the ground, straddled her, and threatened her.”
