Heidi blinked in surprise, still watching Kate. “Is that true?”

Kate looked puzzled. “What?”

Heidi lowered her voice and asked, “Did Ms. Ravelle really steal your fiance?” She hadn’t even heard Kate’s answer, but everyone had already jumped to conclusions.

Kate froze. “Let’s not talk about that anymore, Heidi. Let’s eat.”

Heidi frowned. Upon hearing her colleagues still talking, she raised her voice. “All of you, stop discussing it.

The others paused.

“Heidi, are you really defending Ms. Ravelle? What she did was totally wrong.”

“Yeah! She’s got no morals at all!”

Heidi looked confused. “But Kate hasn’t even confirmed anything.”

Everyone froze. Some stared at Heidi in disbelief. They felt that Kate clearly implied it. How could Heidi not understand that?

But another group thought that Heidi had a point. Indeed, Kate hadn’t confirmed a thing.

Annie rested her chin on her hand, watching the scene like it was some kind of show. Her eyes were wide with innocent confusion. “Yeah, Kate. Did Ms. Ravelle really steal your fiance? If she did, as women, we’d surely support you.”

She hoped that Kate would say yes. But would she dare to?

Kate was cornered for an answer. She hadn’t expected this at all. These women, who had been raised abroad, just couldn’t pick up on the hints.

Just then, her phone buzzed.

She looked up. “Sorry, I need to take this.”

“It’s… Mr. Snider’s mother,” Kate explained to the group. Then, she picked up Cynthia’s call in the private room. “Hello, Mrs. Snider?”

The room fell silent. Everyone held their breath.

Kate subtly turned up the volume. The colleagues right beside her could hear everything, while those a bit farther away caught only parts of the conversation.

Cynthia said, “A friend sent me some floral tea. When are you free to pick it up? Or I can have it sent

over instead.”

Kate smiled warmly and spoke loudly enough for everyone to hear. “Thank you for remembering that I like floral tea, Mrs. Snider. You really didn’t have to. I’ll come by tomorrow to pick it up.”

“That works too.”

“See you tomorrow, Mrs. Snider.”

When the call ended, a colleague immediately asked, “Are you really close with Mr. Snider’s mother?

Kate put down her phone. “Yeah, she’s like another mother to me. We may not be family, but I’m happy to care for her. After my mom passed, Mrs. Snider has been the only one who really cared for me.”

Even her best friend no longer cared about her.
