Early the following day, Kate huddled up in her room to hide from Sawyer's torment. She thought about the past few months, feeling like she'd been stuck in a dream.

Initially, she'd thought that she'd met her lucky charm, her true love, and a godlike man who favored her. But now, she was stuck in this manor like a trapped beast in a cage, not even knowing what had changed.

She'd pondered this question for a long time, but she still didn't have an answer. She figured that she needed to get one. She couldn't suffer such torment without even knowing why, nor could she take the fall for someone else. She was positive that she hadn't done anything to offend Sawyer from the day they'd met up until this point.

Someone knocked on the bedroom door, making Kate jolt. "Who is it?"

Taryn said, "Ms. Pearson, you need to get out of bed and get to your chores."

Kate's temper flared, and she opened the door. "I'm still Sawyer's wife. He and I are facing some problems now, but that's no excuse for you to treat me like this."

How dare Taryn order her around! Didn't she know that there was a disparity between their statuses?

Taryn had argued with Kate the other day over the chicken soup.

No one wanted to take on the task of ordering Kate around. After all, they didn't know whether she and Sawyer would make up in the future. Thus, they didn't think that it would be a good idea to thoroughly offend her.

Taryn didn't care about that, though. She despised Kate. She wasn't exactly sure why, but she just found the latter to be pretentious and wholly unworthy of Sawyer.

She said, "Mr. Burton has made it clear that you're no better than us. He's my employer, so I have no choice but to do as he says. Come with me. Don't blame this on me if Mr. Burton gets mad at you for dragging things out."

Kate wore one of the exquisite, expensive dresses she had bought. It was worth a lot, and even a single one would cost Taryn a year's salary.

Taryn frowned and said, "Change into something else."
