Carter looked at Lauren plainly. "I really am pathetic for handing cash to someone who hates me."
He then turned to leave.
Lauren shot to her feet, grabbed his arm, and pushed him onto a chair. She smiled fawningly and hurried to pour him some water. "Oh, come on. It's a total misunderstanding! That was my second personality popping out just now. She has nothing to do with me, okay? Thanks so much for lending a hand, Mr. Jamison!"
"You need cash?" Sharon asked.
Lauren's face fell. "Yeah. My rent's due. I'm broke, so I asked him to loan me some money."
Carter had pulled out five thousand in cash for her and had split them into two envelopes.
Sharon propped her chin on her hand and scanned them both. "Honestly, living a calm, steady life is pretty nice. You don't need to worry about a financial crisis tanking your company's cash flow or scheming and backstabbing.
"Just focus on earning living expenses, staying in a decent house, driving a not-too-expensive sedan, and raising your two kids. That's the kind of life most people spend their whole lives chasing."
Carter went quiet for a moment, thinking that perhaps Sharon had a point.
Perhaps he wasn't as capable as George, but his abilities had still been recognized through his work at Solaris Ventures. He was getting promoted next month, and he'd pull in around 20 to 30 thousand dollars a month.
That would cover the basics for their family of three, with any extra coming out of his savings. Sometimes, he played the stock market and made a little on the side. His life was stable.
If he kept getting promoted, he could make more every month. Although he wouldn't be at the top of the pyramid, he'd still be comfortably above average.
Carter looked up. "That's my current life. What do you think will happen if I add her to it?"
Lauren felt his disdain like a slap. "What's wrong with me?"
"Your wallet's empty before the end of the month. You'll drag me down."
Lauren bristled. "If I get promoted, I'll get a raise, too, okay?"
"And how much will you make?"
"I could take home like 8,000 dollars!" Lauren's confidence wavered.
