Invisible to My First Love (Harper and Maddox) novel Chapter 100

Chapter 100

Maddox

Uncle Sebastian’s car was about to pull up in a few seconds as I could already hear the engine while I waited in the front yard.

He was finally going to meet Harper and I wouldn’t have wanted things any other way because for the longest time, he always wanted to meet a girl I actually liked.

The thought of what their interaction would be like, made me chuckle as he was full of surprises at times.

Then, I grinned when his car came into view. He knew I could see it as he was looking right at me, but he just felt the need to rev the engine, making me shake my head.

When he parked right beside me, he poked his head out the window with dramatic wide eyes as he whispered

to me.

“Uh–oh, what’s this? You’re out here alone? Don’t tell me Harper already dumped you and left? Did I miss it?”

I laughed a bit too loudly because first of all, that wasn’t going to happen as there was nothing actually going on. Secondly, I knew he just didn’t want to take himself too seriously and that was the version of him I needed around Harper. It bothered me so much that she was nervous.

Just as he opened his car door, I approached him, finally responding to his questions.

“My girlfriend’s inside.”

“I see. It makes sense that she’s still here. Otherwise, you’d be in tears right now,” he teased me as he locked the car.

“Come on. Why would she even dump someone like me when I’m the guy every girl wants?”

Even though I bragged about that, I knew it wasn’t entirely true. I wasn’t the guy every girl wanted. Because she was all about Grayson and that still fucking hurt.

As soon as he slipped his car keys into his pocket, I braced myself for that firm and competitive handshake. Just as expected, his hand tightly wrapped around mine as he raised it and turned it into arm wrestling.

Even in his long–sleeved shirt, I could see the muscles along his arm. He was still in excellent shape.

“Looks like someone has gotten stronger.” He glanced at my flexed bicep, daring me to push his arm all the way down the other side,

But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t, and I knew that would happen.

“I’ve definitely gotten stronger and one day, you won’t come out on top,” I said, my voice a bit strained as I tried my best.

“In other words, it’s not today, so I win.” He smirked confidently.

After he pushed just a little harder, I couldn’t keep going and he got his expected victory.

“Don’t cry about it.” He patted me on the back as we slowly made our way to the front door. “In ten years, you might beat me.”

I scoffed. “Like it’ll actually take that long.”

“Crap.” He pulled back his hand from my back. “This shirt definitely looks as good as new and I wouldn’t want to mess it up. Is Harper okay with you wearing it around her? It does remind her of what happened in London.”

I chuckled before I could even respond. I was so glad that he and I thought alike at times.

“She’s cool with it,” I said as I pushed open the front doors. “She assured me she’ll be okay.”

“Had she said she never wanted to see it again, would you have listened to her?” He thoughtfully tilted his head.

“Yeah,” I said without hesitation. “I’d never wear it in front of her again.”

He sighed. “You know what? Forget I even asked you that. I shouldn’t even be surprised that you’d do that for her. It’s nothing compared to you coming back to San Francisco just for her.”

“Yup.”

“I see you’re all settled in.” He looked around the foyer at everything that was back in its place.

“Yeah… by the way, you look good.” I stared at his black shoes with a nod of approval. They blended perfectly into the marble floor. I knew the price tag on those and they were fit for someone like my uncle.

“I know I look good.” He bragged. “I have to look as good as I feel, which is awesome.”

I studied his side profile in silence and he picked up on it quickly.

“Uncle-”

“I’m fine, really.” His tone got a little defensive as he smiled at me and led the way to the living room. “Just because I’m going through a divorce doesn’t mean I need to let myself go. Your aunt is out there living her best life. Why shouldn’t I?”

I really wished they could work things out, but he didn’t give me any hope that it would ever come to that.

“So, I’m coming to the ball tomorrow.” He changed the subject, but I decided to go with it.

“Do you have a date?”

“Nope. I can pick one out from the crowd. Don’t forget who you’re talking to.” He smirked, taking a seat and making himself comfortable.

“I really look forward to it.” I rubbed my hands together as I took a seat on the opposite couch. “I get to deal with Kate for what she did to Harper at the mall.”

“How come?

“She’s nervous.”

BLUEPRINT 100 1

Closing the door behind me and standing right near it, I said, “This is it and remember the few things we discussed, just in case my favorite color, food or artist comes up, not that there would be any scenario where he’d ask me that. But sometimes, shit like that can happen.”
