The motel I had checked into was small and outdated, but I just needed a place to hide out without drawing attention to myself. I’d been there for a few hours.

I was sitting on the edge of the stiff mattress for a few while, restless even as my feet were glued to the floor. I was unable to think of anything except Tiffany.

Finally, my phone screen lit up beside me with an incoming call from Jake and my pulse jumped so fast that it made me pick up with wide eyes.

“Any news?”

“I followed her,” he said from the other end of the line. “She left your house about an hour after you did.”

“And?” I raised my eyebrows in anticipation.

“She stopped at some building. I asked around and it’s a new small business specialized in printing. As I speak to you now, she’s parked inside.”

As soon as I got off the phone with him, I changed into the disguise I had with me. They were some plain black joggers, a black mask and shades. I didn’t look like my usual self.

I got a cab to get to him, stepping out just a block away from where Tiffany was supposed to be. He then picked me up from there and headed towards the building where he’d left her car parked.

He’d already told me where her car was, but when I spotted it myself with the custom number plate parked inside that yard. I sighed with disappointment.

Jake parked down the street and for a while, nothing happened as I stared at the building. It was ten minutes, then twenty and then thirty.

He finally exhaled loudly and looked over at me. “No offense man, but I still can’t believe I’ve been tailing Tiffany Aldridge because her husband asked.” He shook his head. “I didn’t think a couple like you would have problems.”

I lowered my shades as I turned my head slowly and spoke from behind my mask since I still had to hide my

nose.

“Mind

your own business,” I said flatly. “Remember you’re being paid well. That means that no matter what happens, you better keep your mouth shut. Don’t even think about going to the press with this.”

He held up his hands to ease the tension. “Relax, I’m discreet. You’re good.”

I was in the middle of telling him what would happen to him if word got out when someone in my peripheral vision caught my attention. A figure walked up the sidewalk towards the building and I froze when I looked over. It was a side view of Josh, holding a bag of food as he walked inside. He was in a black tailored suit, not the convenience store uniform I was used to. I just couldn’t believe it. What the hell was he doing there?

For a moment, I told myself it wasn’t him, but he looked back at something, giving me a full view of his face. It was definitely him.

My chest tightened at the thought of Josh and Tiffany in the same building.

I slumped back in my seat, the air leaving my lungs for a while.

“Are you okay?” Jake asked.

“Do I look okay to you?” I spat at him. “Mind your own fucking business.”

“I was just ask-”

“And I said mind your own business!”

“Sorry, Mr Ford.”

I sat in silence for a while as I listened to my heart pound, telling myself not to jump to conclusions, but how could Tiffany be there when she said she’d be at the spa? How could Josh be in that building dressed in a suit when he worked at a store?

I stared at the building for a very long time, every nerve in my body bracing myself for anything that would explain why the two of them were in the same building.

Nothing happened for a while until Tiffany walked out of the open gate. Seeing her with my own eyes felt different from hearing Jake say she was inside. This was undeniably real.

She walked for a while, her phone pressed against her ear as she looked around the street casually.

Even though I had a full disguise, I still ducked down when she looked in my direction.

I wondered what she would say this time and I wanted to hear it as soon as possible. I took out my phone and dialed her number while she was still talking to someone else.

After a few seconds, she switched calls and picked up mine.

“Hey babe,” she said sweetly.

From the car, I could only see her back because she was facing the other side.

“Hey, how’s the spa?” I asked, holding my breath once again.

“It’s amazing,” she said with a giggle. “We’re having so much fun.”

My blood boiled. “I’d love to say hi to them.”

“Oh, they’re too deep into their massages right now,” she replied quickly, “but I’ll tell them you said hi

afterwards.”

“I guess you’re the only one who’s not too deep in those massages if you’re talking to me right now.” I forced myself to keep being polite.

“Yeah, I already had mine.”

“So, where are you now?”

“I’m just chilling by the pool.”

I tightened the grip on my phone so hard at that lie. I wanted to laugh so badly in disbelief. She was standing on a sidewalk.

Now that I was seeing her face when she finally turned, I did the only thing I could think of because I wanted to see her reaction. I flirted with her.

“I already miss you,” I said in the smoothest tone I could muster.

She smiled, but it looked like she was forcing it. “I miss you too. Let’s go on a date when you return.”

“I like the sound of that. I love you.”

She rolled her eyes. “I love you too.”

I couldn’t believe what I had just seen. She actually rolled her eyes while telling me she loved me. That hit harder than any punch I’d taken from her brother.

Even after the call came to an end, I still had my phone pressed against my ear. I never thought I’d see her look like that while talking to me.

Jake cleared his throat as he said, “Mr. Ford, are you okay?”

“Shut up!” I snapped at him.

He murmured something but I didn’t even bother to find out what it was. Tiffany had broken me just with that eye roll.

I wondered what else I was going to see apart from that, so I wanted to wait, but just then, my phone rang. I didn’t want to pick up right away, but when I looked at the screen, my heart skipped a beat. It was an incoming call from a potential investor, someone I’d been trying to work with for months.

I picked up and it turned out that he wanted to grab a drink with me right away since he was in town.

Closing my eyes, I thought about the timing, but I couldn’t say no. He could open more doors for me

Before Jake dropped me off a few blocks from the bar, I gave him clear instructions.

“Don’t lose sight of my wife. I don’t care what happens. Follow her.”

He nodded in agreement. “Got it.”

After he left, I took off my mask and shades just to look more appealing, then walked into the restaurant to meet that potential investor.

I greeted him when I got to the counter. I had to come up with a lie about why I was in that outfit. The best
