Invisible to My First Love (Harper and Maddox) novel Chapter 20

Chapter 20

Maddox

The panic in Kate’s voice and body language made me take out my phone to find out what all the panic was about. Harper had posted a long comment..

“Man, I used to hate those photos,” her reply started, “Who would want that girl? Turns out…me. I used to wonder why some people didn’t notice me, but I’m glad they didn’t. It gave me space to become who I am today. The girl in those photos isn’t someone I laugh at, she’s someone I thank.”

She also posted her simple skincare routine, how she cares for her hair and tagged her friends, Ella and Zoey to show them some love.

I paused, my thumb hovering over the screen to read Harper’s reply over and over again. It reminded me of that evening when I saw her again at Grayson and Tiffany’s engagement party. I tried to mock her but she knew how to stand up for herself. It was for this reason that I expected nothing less in that situation with the post. I just didn’t realize it would be that satisfying.

What made it even better were the replies under Harper’s comment.

“Wait, what moisturizer do you use?”

“Can you please do a full routine video?”

“OMG I’m definitely following for more tips!”

“You’ve made me realize we need to focus on someone’s glow–up and not tear them down.”

Even the friends Harper had tagged were now in the comments.

There were so many replies under her comment that I couldn’t read any more, but the post was now getting more love than hate because the internet that mocked her a few hours ago switched sides.

Just as I smirked at how she turned the tables, Tiffany let out an annoying high–pitched scream and I looked over, that already being the reaction I expected.

She placed a hand on her hip with a sharp breath. “That bitch really thinks this makes her special?”

“It’s crazy how everyone is now on her side,” Kate chimed in.

“Shut the fuck up, Kate!” Tiffany hissed. “This little glow–up doesn’t erase what Harper used to be. I’m going to destroy her for this. You’ll see!”

There wasn’t a single part of me that felt bad for my sister. I even leaned against the wall just to watch the show.

Kate was there, trying to give her opinion, but what got my attention more was Grayson’s silence. He stood beside Tiffany with his hands shoved deep into his pockets, his eyes glued to the floor. He had a lot to say when Margot and Kate made all those comments about Harper. But now that his wife had openly sworn revenge on Harper, he was completely silent.

It was all so pathetic that I didn’t want to be there anymore. I moved away from the wall and began to make my way to the front door.

“Let’s go,” I said to Kate.

She was just about to rush to me when Grayson’s voice cut through the air.

“Wait.”

I paused, but didn’t turn around.

“Can we talk outside?”

Tiffany was too focused on the post about Harper to even ask what Grayson had to talk to me about.

I stepped outside and left the door behind me open so he could follow.

I was right by the steps, but he walked past me.

“I thought you wanted to talk.” My forehead creased.

“Not over there.”

I sighed, following him all the way to the backyard. “What’s this about?”

“When are you leaving town?” he asked bluntly.

I shook my head lightly. “I should have known. Why-”

“Just answer the question.”

“I don’t know. Any problem?”

“The sooner you leave, the better. Harper told me you two are just having a good time but I know her. I don’t want to see her catching feelings for someone like you.”

I scoffed. “Is that what you’re really worried about?”

“Meaning?”

“Whatever you think it means. Look, it’s just as she said, we’re having a good time and-”

“And that’s why you needed town as soon as possible so you can leave Harper alone.”

My eyes narrowed with a smirk. “What makes you think I’ll leave the fun behind?”

“You can always have fun wherever you go in this world. You’re Maddox Aldridge, you’ll find it.”

“Well, there’s no fun like Harper. I’m talking from personal experiences, which you can’t relate to. If only you could see the way she fucks me and-”

He cut me off mid–sentence when he grabbed me by the collar, his forehead vein popping out.

I raised my eyebrows in amusement as I looked at his hands on me then back at his face. “Whoa, seems like someone’s forgotten where they are. And aren’t you getting a little too pissed about this?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about. You…”

Chapter 20 1

“You’re still mad at me right? Look, about what happened in your room. I just wanted you so badly that I said all those things. I didn’t mean any of it. We’re cool, right?”

I couldn’t stop thinking about how Tiffany and Kate interrupted my father and I right when he was about to tell me why he had insisted that I come over. He said we’d talk about it later but the look in his eyes made me want to call him right away so he could tell me over the phone even though I knew that wouldn’t happen. I had never seen him so serious.
