Grayson
I had an important meeting at work but still had a little time to spare, so I rushed back home from Harper’s place because Tiffany needed me.
I pushed the bedroom door open and found her on the floor, the side of her face resting right in Kate’s lap while tears streamed down her face.
She saw me and raised her head, running to me and throwing her arms around my neck with what now looked like racoon eyes. She had smudged her makeup.
I held her tight, kissing her forehead before speaking to her gently.
“It’s okay, baby.”
“No, it’s not.” She gently hit my chest. “What’s okay about losing clients? All because of that post I made about Harper? What the fuck does my personal life have to do with my professional life?”
“A lot, actually,” Kate chimed in.
“Shut the fuck up!” Tiffany snapped at her, then burst into tears again. “This is all Harper’s fault! I’ll make her pay for this.”
“Aren’t you the one who started this?” I asked.
“Are you defending her?” She scowled.
I kissed her forehead. “Of course not. Why would I defend her? Come here.”
My grip on her waist tightened as I guided her to the bed. I sat down first then brought her close so she could rest her head on my chest.
“It hurts so bad,” she sniffled.
“Did you tell your mom?” I wiped her tears.
“No.”
“And your dad?”
She shot me a glare. “You know exactly what he’ll say and I don’t want to hear it!”
“But you can’t hide something like this. I’m certain that they already know.”
“They definitely do,” Kate chimed in. “They’ve been calling her and sending messages. She just won’t respond.”
She buried her face in my chest again as she burst into tears, her makeup smearing the fabric of my suit.
I thought back to the day she’d made that post so she could humiliate Harper and my father–in–law had actually scolded her for it. He’d hinted at the possibility of something like that happening and even I had highly doubted it as Tiffany’s family was quite influential in the corporate world. Many wished to work with them but in the end, that wasn’t a good look for her.
It was a good thing he was out of town with my mother–in–law. Otherwise, he would’ve reminded her of the day he told her about the possible consequences of her actions.
My phone began to ring and I raised my hip to take it out of my pocket, the caller ID making me sigh. It was my assistant, probably calling to remind me about how important that day’s meeting was.
“It’s the office. Just give me a second.” My voice was gentle.
I gently got up from the bed, Tiffany now resting her head on a pillow while I spoke to my assistant in the hallway.
After the call, I opened the bedroom door and signaled to Kate to step out so I could have a word with her.
“Oh, how come?”
