Invisible to My First Love (Harper and Maddox) novel Chapter 84

Chapter 84

Harper

Maddox took me past the first floor, leading the way until he stopped at an unusual looking spot in the hallway. There were some layers of grill doors before the actual door, making me tilt my head with curiosity. It also reminded me of the other one back at his San Francisco house.

He casually reached in the pocket of his suit jacket, taking out a bunch of keys and casually getting closer to begin unlocking the grill doors.

I’d heard the keys jingle a few times since we’d arrived and I would’ve never guessed what their actual was.

After finally unlocking the actual door, he held onto the doorknob and looked back at me.

“You’re about to see my old room. Come in.”

I didn’t think too much of it at first, but when he opened the door and kept it open so I could walk in, I did it slowly, furrowing my eyebrows at the state it was in.

Unable to keep my mouth shut, I said, “Why does it look so-”

“Old? I called it an old room for a reason.”

I playfully rolled my eyes.

He closed the door behind him and I just stood in place, taking in the view of everything around. It looked so different from the rest of the estate. Everything had been modernized, except that one room.

He walked over to the window and opened the blinds, the sunlight showing me everything I couldn’t see before. Even the window frame reminded me of older times.

“Well? Are you just going to stand there? Look around.”

There was a certain demeanor I was used to when I was around Maddox but at that moment, it wasn’t there and his smile was almost….pure.

“It’s none of my business,” I began, approaching the bed with a sheet that had aristocratic embroidery, “but why is this room so different? Why lock it?”

The embroidery on the sheet was so eye–catching that I leaned over and touched it as I waited for his response.

“This is the only place that still feels like home when I come to the estate. It’s because it’s just as it was when my mom was still alive and we were a family.”

I paused, the palm on my hand still on the sheet but unable to touch it any further.

“This one room has stayed this way because that’s how I wanted it to be. I wanted a piece of home. That’s why

it’s always locked and cleaned only when I’m here. People can go wherever they want when they visit this estate, just not this room. It’s mine and everyone knows it. No one gets in unless they’re invited, not even my dad. Beautiful sheet, isn’t it? My mom picked it out for me.”

I quickly pulled back my hand and straightened up, lightly shaking my head as I made my way to the door.

“Hey,” he rushed to me, quickly stopping me before I could open the door. “Where are you going?”

I looked back at him, a small smile on my lips. “Now that I get the meaning behind why this room is in such an old state, it’s even more beautiful and the way I see it, this is too personal. I shouldn’t be here.”

He chuckled softly, his hold on my hand getting firmer.

“Did I say something funny?” I asked.

“You’re not going anywhere. You’re staying right here with me.”
