Invisible to My First Love (Harper and Maddox) novel Chapter 98

Chapter 98

Harper

“They’ve got you now!” Kate sneered as she approached. “How dare you come here when you know you can’t afford anything? You’re nothing but thieves!”

“What are you talking about?” the three of us said in unison.

“Good thing I saw you three at the right time. Look at you, getting ready to run out of here with shoes you can never afford. Security, throw them out!”

Security closed in on us to shorten the distance, making the three of us back up against each other like we’d actually done something wrong.

It wasn’t just Kate watching us, everyone who had come to the store, paused and some of them even took out their phones.

“You have it all wrong.” I said. “We were just about to pay for-”

“Oh, please, cut the bullshit Harper. Just a pair costs more than your entire life’s worth!”

Security seemed to believe Kate. She must have been a regular at their store and that explained why it was already working in her favor.

“Is it true? Were you about to run off?” one of the security guards asked.

I never thought I’d see the day where I’d have to use my newfound status to get out of such a situation, but I couldn’t wait to see the look on Kate’s face.

“Do you know who I am?” I asked.

“That doesn’t work here,” another security guard said. “Just pay for the shoes or hand them over.”

They all held out their hands.

“Ugh!” Kate groaned. “Why are you even wasting time with them? Just take the goddamn shoes!”

“Take it easy as we handle the situation, Miss,” one of the guards said to her,

“By the time we leave this store, you’re all going to regret this,” I said.

It made no difference to me that they didn’t take action right away. It was already embarrassing that they’d surrounded us like we were already guilty.

“Please move aside so I can make the payment,” I said to the one blocking the way towards the counter.

“Don’t listen to her!” Kate infuriatingly chimed in. “She’s just going to run with those two bitches behind her!”

“Kate, I don’t know you that well, but fuck you!” Ella yelled.

For a moment, it seemed like security listened to me, but they chose to listen to Kate, not letting their guard. down even for a second.

“Are you really going to make me do this?” I sighed. “Fine.”

I handed my shoes to Ella and Zoey, rummaged through my purse and held up the golden card Maddox had

sent to me.

The guards‘ eyes widened as they instantly stepped back, the onlookers gasping as they came closer.

“That’s an actual gold card!” one of the onlookers said. “Each one contains not less than $1,000,000,000!”

“What?” Kate said with irritation, pushing past the guards to take a closer look at the card. “How do you have this? Did you steal it?”

I didn’t have time for how dumb she was that she couldn’t figure it out. It turns out I wasn’t the only one as Zoey stepped in front of me and shoved her to the side.

“I know you’re slow, but I didn’t think you’re this slow,” she said to Kate.

It was thanks to the guard behind her that she wasn’t yet on the floor after being shoved.

“Look at you three,” I said to the guards, not wasting time on Kate. “Now you finally give us space after seeing this card? Couldn’t you have just trusted us before? Did we really have to take things this far?”

I finally took off my shades and hat, the onlookers gasping once again.

“That’s Harper Moore!” one of them said. “She’s Maddox Aldridge’s girlfriend!”

The guards‘ eyes went wide at the mention of Maddox.

“Ma’am, we apologize for the inconvenience. Please understand that we-”

“You apologize?” I sighed. “You’re lucky I’m not calling my boyfriend right now. You’d be out of a job before the end of this hour. Since you wanted these shoes so badly, you can have them.”

I expected Ella and Zoey to be hesitant because they wanted the shoes so badly, but there were so many other stores at the mall and with that in mind, they shoved all six pairs of heels right into the guards‘ chests.

“We’re done here,” I said, looking at my girls. “Let’s check out some other stores. We’ll probably find something even better.”

Putting my shades and hat back on, I stopped in my tracks and said, “You’re blocking our way. Please step aside so we can leave.
