Valeria was in the kitchen, using the kettle to boil water and washing strawberries.
As it was strawberry season, the berries were big and sweet but had a short shelf life.
She had just finished washing the strawberries and split them into two bowls, setting one aside for Selena, who was in the bedroom.
As Valeria turned with both plates in hand, a tall figure suddenly loomed behind her, making her jump.
How did Sebastian show up without making a sound?
The kitchen was small, and he just stood there in the doorway, watching her tie her apron. The scene was calm and peaceful in a way that held Sebastian spellbound for a couple of minutes.
Valeria was wearing a pink sweater. Her slender back was beautiful, and her skin was fair and smooth under the warm yellow light of the kitchen.
Her long hair fell to the side of her face as she lowered her head.
Startled, she parted her lips slightly, and her eyes trembled as she looked at him.
Sebastian picked up a strawberry and popped it into his mouth. It was surprisingly sweet.
He picked up another strawberry, bit into it, but didn't eat it. Instead, he slipped an arm around her slender waist, lifted her onto the counter, and kissed her while slipping the strawberry between her lips as its juice burst in their mouths.
With his other hand, he closed the frosted glass kitchen door.
Then, he reached up and switched on the kitchen hood.
The steady hum drowned out the faint sounds of their kissing, their breathing, and the small whimpers.
Her hair draped over her cheeks, her breathing was unsteady, her lips were moist with a faint sheen, and she leaned against the wall for support.
"If you wanna do it, hurry up. Selena might come out soon."
Valeria knew exactly what he wanted. After all, she wasn't planning to stay in Slate City much longer.
"No," he replied as his long fingers brushed her hair away from her cheek. His fingertips gently caressed her cheek. "If I do it too fast, you won't be able to take it."
Sebastian held her chin and lifted her head. "Valeria, look at me."
She met his gaze.
Their eyes locked, his gaze steady and unwavering.
"Sure. What is it?" Sebastian replied.
Right now, whatever Valeria asked for, Sebastian would say yes. Even if she said she wanted to be his wife, he would find a way to get Nicholas' approval. And then figure out how to get her divorced.
If worst comes to worst, he would give Shane some financial compensation.
Sebastian was startled by his own thoughts. Maybe he really had fallen for her, enough to want to marry a woman who was already married, and not just meddle in her relationship.
"Can you help me reschedule Dr. Gordon's surgery to an earlier date?" Valeria asked. Selena took time off from school because of a tarsal bone fracture and was resting at home.
It was the perfect time to move the surgery up since this major operation required a long recovery.
If the surgery were to be done now, Selena would have recovered after the New Year.
"Sure," Sebastian replied, nodding. He was surprised by Valeria's request.
He lowered his head and kissed her deeply for several minutes, wearing her down. She sat on the counter, her hands barely steady, so she wrapped her arms around his neck for support.
Suddenly, Sebastian remembered something.
