Chapter 241
Chapter 241
Sebastian had once been jealous of how Shane had so easily gotten everything he’d ever
wanted.
Now, it turned out that he had been the reason for Valeria’s scar-and all her suffering.
“That year, why did you decide to break up with me without saying a word? I received your letter about a year after I returned from studying abroad,” Sebastian said.
Once, when he’d been drunk, he’d tried to call her number-only to find out it was already out
of service.
Sebastian continued, “At a class reunion, I asked about you. Our classmates said you were sick and had taken a break from Stredview University…”
It turned out she had already been pregnant at that time.
He had always avoided confronting the truth of his relationship with Jane―never even daring to say her name aloud.

Then, one day, he met someone who reminded him of her, and instead of facing the past, h
pursued that woman as a way to escape it.
At that moment, Sebastian couldn’t bring himself to look into Valeria’s eyes. Her tearful yet calm gaze made it hard for him to breathe, as though his heart were being torn to pieces.
Valeria explained, “I wasn’t sick. I was pregnant. I took a break from school that year and gave birth to Lenny. But eight months later, she was diagnosed with a heart condition.
“By the time she turned two, my house was filled with stacks of medical reports. She had to take medication every day, and she couldn’t be apart from me.
“Since I had already lost a son, I was terrified of losing her. So, I dropped out of university and found a job by faking my education. Honestly speaking, I did think of you from time to time over the years.”
Valeria’s voice was calm as she shakily enunciated her words.
Each word was like a needle to Sebastian’s heart as he closed his eyes tightly. His fingers had turned white from how tightly he was clenching his hands.
Then, Valeria said slowly, “I’m just playing around. I’ll be going abroad to study soon.”
She smiled bitterly as she watched Sebastian’s expression shift into confusion. He had said

those words so casually that he couldn’t even remember them-yet they would haunt her for
the rest of her life.
Sebastian gulped, feeling like he was swallowing a bunch of blades. When he looked up and looked into the rearview mirror, he could see the broken look in his eyes.
The silence in the car was suffocating, and only the screeching sound of the wiper moving against the dry glass could be heard.
With shaky hands, Sebastian tried several times to turn off the wipers before finally succeeding.
He saw the devastation in Valeria’s eyes, but his mind went blank. He could not remember ever saying such a sentence.
He tried to search his memories, and after a moment of silence, he lowered his head. His voice was hoarse beyond recognition as he choked out, “I’m sorry…”
A few seconds later, he said again, “I’m so sorry.”
Valeria looked out the window.
The neon lights lighting up Slate City blurred due to the tears in her eyes. She wiped her tears silently, but they kept streaming down her cheeks. So she wiped them again before closing her
eyes.
They had been extremely calm throughout their conversation until now, but those calm words had cut Sebastian more deeply than the impulsive ones they’d said previously.
…
After sending Valeria back to Lucy’s home, Sebastian quickly drove away. The second he left her neighborhood, he quickly stopped his car by the roadside.
He was gripping the steering wheel so tightly that the veins in his arms were popping out. Slowly, he raised his hand to cover his face as his body trembled in silence.
It was almost 10:00 pm, so there weren’t many people on the road. Since he was in a residential area, only two to three cars had driven past him.
