“Two million!” Stella shouted.

The price jumped up so quickly that everyone turned to look. They saw Stella holding up her number three paddle, her face full of determination–she was set on winning this.

Although the Spencer family was in dire straits and needed to be careful with every penny, Stella knew that if she could gain anything valuable from this note, it would be worth far more than two million.

“Any more bids?” the auctioneer asked excitedly. “If no one else, then this design notebook will go to…” He let the final word hang in the air, and just as he’d hoped, someone in the crowd responded,

“2.5 million.” Sylvia raised her paddle, locking eyes with Stella. “Ms. Spencer, you already beat me once at the jewelry show. Honestly, I need this notebook more than you do, right?”

It was obvious Sylvia knew exactly what she was bidding on–she could tell how valuable it really was.

If Sylvia hadn’t brought it up, Stella would’ve almost forgotten. “If I remember right, Ms. Jansen, you still owe me a favor, don’t you?”

Sylvia’s smile froze for a moment, but she quickly brushed it off. “You’re really going to use it here?” After all, the favor was worth far more than that notebook.

‘Honestly, I thought Stella would save that favor for a real pinch, not cash it in here of all places, Sylvia thought. ‘Guess she’s not playing the long game after all

Stella smiled faintly and nodded. “Why not? I’m not really going to need it for anything else.”

She never actually believed that if she asked Sylvia for something outrageous, Sylvia would agree. So she figured she might as well cash in the favor now.

“Alright,” Sylvia nodded. “I’ll keep my word and stop bidding”

Stella didn’t pay Sylvia any more attention and nailed the deal for 2.55 million.

Once she paid, an event staff member brought the notebook over. Stella was eager to look at it, but then she remembered her eyes weren’t fully healed yet, and she felt a bit disappointed.

“No worries, Erica leaned over to glance at the pages. “I can read it to you, even though I don’t really get it either.

“Thanks,” Stella said, smiling at her friend. She leaned in, listening intently to Erica’s quiet explanation. With every word, her smile grew wider.

“Looks like this notebook really is useful,” Jeremy remarked as he glanced their way,

Stella nodded, her excitement barely contained. “Useful? That’s an understatement–this is insanely valuable.”

Though the notebook wasn’t thick, every part seemed carefully selected, sparking tons of ideas for her jewelry

With just a little thought, new jewelry collections after the Thorn Collection started forming in her mind, almost as if the ideas were already waiting for her.

Jeremy smiled. “Looks like you made the right call.”

“Of course,” Stella nodded, carefully putting the notebook away like a treasured find.

After that, nothing in the auction caught her interest. Even if something did, she wasn’t going to bid again. The 2.55 million she just spent was more than enough to clear up any lingering negative press.

Two hours later, the event wound down and the crowd headed out in order.

“Ms. Spencer,” someone suddenly called out.

Erica leaned in and whispered, “It’s that homewrecker.”

Suddenly, Stella switched topics, “Hey, why didn’t you mention she’s been at the hospital too?”

Erica fell silent. She didn’t want to say anything because, given what had happened, telling Stella would feel like twisting a knife in her heart.

“Eh, never mind,” Stella waved it off when Erica didn’t answer. She decided not to press anymore. “Let’s head back. I’m pretty wiped after being out all this time.”

“Alright,” Erica replied, nodding. As they headed out, Erica helped Stella walk. When they passed Sylvía, Erica shot her a teasing look. “Come on, Ms. Jansen, or do you need me to help you too?”

Sylvia didn’t react to her sarcasm, just followed them calmly.

Outside the restaurant, when Jeremy saw Sylvia walking with them, he raised an eyebrow. “Ms. Jansen, didn’t expect to see you with them. What brings you here?”

“She’s clingy as super glue–once she latches on, good luck shaking her off,” Erica jabbed, never one to pass up a shot

Sylvia pretended not to hear and gave Jeremy a sweet smile. “Mr. Ford, I’m heading to the hospital too. Would you mind giving me a ride?”

Seeing that Stella was cool with it, Jeremy didn’t hesitate. “No problem, it’s on my way. Hop in, it’s getting late -I’ll drop you all off.”

On the ride back, the expected awkward silence never came. Sylvia was surprisingly talkative, jumping from topic to topic–she seemed to have something to say about everything.

Even when Erica kept teasing and throwing shade her way, Sylvia just kept grinning back, totally unfazed. With all her pleasantness, it was hard not to wonder what her real intentions were.

“Wait!” Erica suddenly spoke up, her tone exaggerated. “You’re not planning some crazy car accident to take us all out, are you?”

Truth be told, Sylvia had briefly thought about it–though only as a wicked little daydream. Not even counting Stella, just Erica and Jeremy’s status made that kind of stunt completely out of the question.
