Kane’s parents had died in a car accident years ago, leaving him with no one to turn to. With everyone ganging up on him, he was forced to head to Seabrook looking for some outside support, trying to carve out a new escape route for himself.

He didn’t want to end up having no choice but to off himself if he lost the fight.

One could never underestimate just how ruthless and cold–hearted people in the elite world could be.

Jeremy didn’t mind the sarcasm at all. He smiled lightly and said. “Mr. Carter, it’s all up to you, isn’t it?”

“I see. Kane nodded, tossed out that line, and stood up to leave.

It wasn’t until Kane’s figure disappeared down the hallway that Erica, looking totally baffled, asked, “What just happened? I didn’t get it at all. Did he say yes or no?”

“Who knows?” Jeremy shrugged, not caring about Kane’s answer at all.

He was thinking. ‘Some things you only know for sure when they actually happen. Words alone don’t mean a thing.

“Whatever,” Erica said, not bothering to dig any deeper. She was just there for the snacks; no way was she getting involved in all that business drama.

Stella frowned, looking thoughtful, and ventured, “I have a feeling he already agreed.”

“Really?” Jeremy hadn’t expected this bit of insight. He leaned in, curiosity piqued. “What makes you say that?”

“Jeremy, I already told you, it’s just a feeling,” Stella replied.

Jeremy just stared at her, at a complete loss for words.

“Well, that’s one hell of an answer. Left me totally speechless.

‘Here I was, thinking you’d picked up on something, and I was all ready to school you. But nope, you just come out with “it’s a feeling“? For real?

I really can’t with this, Jeremy thought.

Even though Stella’s eyes hadn’t fully recovered yet, she could still see the deadpan look on Jeremy’s face. She gave a sheepish grin. “Jeremy, you’re the one calling all the shots. Why should I stress about any of this?”

Jeremy let out a soft sigh, practically worrying himself sick over her. “You can’t just be a jewelry designer forever,

If it weren’t for the Spencer family, Lumière Group, and getting tangled up with the Lloyd Group, Stella could honestly do whatever she wanted.

But now that she was mixed up in this circle, a lot just wasn’t up to her anymore.

Jeremy could oversee everything and keep Lumière Group running for her, but even he would slip up sometimes. He couldn’t be there to watch over her twenty–four seven.

Whenever Jeremy couldn’t keep an eye on her, Stella knew she’d have only herself to count on.

Stella totally understood what Jeremy meant. She pressed her lips together, just about to speak, when Erical jumped in, patting her own chest and saying, “Looks like she can’t count on you, Jeremy.”

With that. Erica slung her arm around Stella and gently nudged her head onto Erica’s shoulder. “As long as I’m here, I’ll look out for Stella. I’d like to see who dares mess with her.”

Jeremy gave a snarky look. “Careful, Erica. Squeeze her any harder and you won’t need anyone else to come after her–she’ll be out cold right in your arms.”

“Huh?” Erica jumped, and when she turned, Stella’s eyes were nearly popping out of her head. Erica instantly loosened her hold. “Stella, you okay?”

“Ahem… Yeah, I’m good,” Stella replied, shaking her head with a helpless smile.

If Stella didn’t know how Erica was, she might seriously think her friend was out to get her.

Erica chuckled awkwardly. “I was going for that whole ‘wealthy–dude–doting–on–his–wife‘ scene.”

Jeremy teased, “Only you somehow turned it into a murder mystery instead, huh?”

“Jeremy, friends keep secrets, right? That’s why we’re still tight,” Erica joked.

“That’s enough. Didn’t you two say you had to go to Irene’s PTA meeting this afternoon? It’s almost two already. You’d better hurry up, or the little one will throw a fit if you’re late,” Jeremy said.

Irene wasn’t acting up, but she pretty much ignored both Erica and Stella as they rushed in. She was so tiny, tucked away in the corner, completely shadowed by gloom–she looked so pitiful it tugged at people’s heartstrings.

She tapped Irene’s little butt with the tip of her toe, amused by how Irene wobbled each time. Erica flashed a big, toothy grin and chirped, “Hey, munchkin, got something bothering you? Spit it out and give me something to laugh about!”

Stella looked a little embarrassed. “Ms. Lee, I’ve been so swamped today that I barely even glanced at my phone. That’s why I missed your calls.”

“It’s okay, we all get busy. But right now, I really think you need to check on Irene. If this goes on, it could seriously mess with her health,” Linda said, sounding genuinely worried.

“Got it, I’ll go right now,” Stella replied.

As soon as Stella stepped back into the classroom, Erica practically ran up, eyes wide with concern. “What happened?”

Stella

gave her a quick rundown and hurried straight over to Irene. She had just bent down, arms out to pull the little girl in for some comfort, when Irene beat her to it–bursting out in tears and kicking up a fuss before Stella could even reach her.

“Get away from me! Don’t touch me!” Irene shrieked, her little face twisted in anger.

“None of you care about me, so I don’t care about you either!” Irene snapped, her tiny body shaking with rage.

Irene squirmed and shouted, her face beet red and tears pouring down her cheeks. “You’re a bad mom, you’re a bad lady, and Ms. Jansen’s such a liar! She said she’d come help me at the PTA meeting! I messaged her and she ignored me, and now she’s not even here! You’re all so mean!”

‘Well, mystery solved,‘ Stella thought, feeling a bit helpless. ‘All this heartbreak just because Sylvia flaked on the PTA meeting. Honestly, me standing here like this–how pathetic is that?‘

The rare bit of sympathy Stella felt for Irene was completely shattered by those words, and whatever softness was in her eyes faded, leaving them cold and indifferent again.

Erica couldn’t hold it in and looked ready to say something, but Stella stopped her. “Enough, the teacher said keeping this up could hurt her. Just don’t push her anymore, alright?”

Erica made a face. “Guess I’ll give her a break this time.”
