Chapter 139

The hospital room was thick with a pang of nervous, heavy silence.

But the doctor soon broke the tension, glancing at both of them and saying in a steady voice, “Since the patient has woken up, that means the most dangerous part is behind us. All she needs now is a good rest, and she’ll recover bit by bit.”

“Seriously? That’s it?” Michael thought, fists itching, ‘If that’s all, why did he have to act all dramatic and scare me like that?‘

“Of course, that’s not all,” the doctor went on. “She’s just come out of two major surgeries back–to–back–her body’s basically hit rock bottom.

“When her wounds close up, she won’t be anywhere near as strong as before. She might get cold or overheated easily, or just be unable to do physical stuff.

“As for the rest, we’ll have to wait till recovery and rehab to see what she’s really up against.”

Ernest frowned and asked, “There’s no way to nurse her back to the way she was?”

Michael cut in, “Doesn’t matter what it costs. Just do whatever it takes to get Sylvia back to how she used to be.”

“That’s not possible,” the doctor replied with a shake of his head. “Her foundation’s shot. Only time can help her recover at this point.”

Ernest asked, “How long are we talking about?”

The doctor replied, “At the very least, decades—and that’s only if someone carefully manages every part of her life, from her diet to her daily routine. If it takes longer…”

Ernest cut in, “Got it. I’ll hire someone to take care of her.”

“That’s not all,” the doctor added. “You’re her boyfriend. You need to make sure you’re around for her, too. She’ll recover better if she’s happy.”

Ernest nodded. “Okay.”

“Alright, I’ll head out then. If you need anything, just come find me in my office,” the doctor said.

He didn’t stick around; he just turned and walked out.

Standing by Sylvia’s bedside, Ernest and Michael were so focused on her that they didn’t notice the doctor glance back at her and give her the slightest nod before quietly slipping out.

“You should head home and get some rest. I’ll take care of her,” Ernest said, making it clear he wanted Michael to head out.

Michael was feeling pretty wiped out himself. He thought for a second, then said, “Should I get a care worker to help out? Ernest, you could get some rest, too.”

“I’m good,” Ernest replied.

“Alright then. I’ll come by to see Sylvia tomorrow,” Michael said.

He left with a big yawn, so only Ernest and Sylvia were left in the hospital room.

Sylvia had been stuck in bed all day, and now that she’d finally woken up, she didn’t feel sleepy at all. The oxygen mask was really annoying, pressing against her face, so she tried to pull it off, but her arms were so weak and floppy that she barely managed to lift them a little.

Ernest said, “If you want to do anything, just let me know.”

“I want to take off the oxygen mask,” Sylvia murmured, her voice feeble. “It’s not comfortable.”

Remembering the doctor had said she could take it off if it bothered her, Ernest leaned over and gently removed the mask for her. “How does that feel?” he asked softly.

Sylvia gave a small nod. “Much better.”

With the oxygen mask gone, Sylvia’s face was completely drained of color, her lips ghostly pale. Without anything to hide it, the harsh reality hit Ernest even harder.

His gaze grew frostier, a cold resolve sharpening in his eyes–like he’d finally made a ruthless decision.

Sylvia pressed her lips together for a moment and then said quietly, “Ernest, could you get me some water? I’m feeling thirsty.”

Ernest rose, got her a glass of warm water, and gently helped her drink. As he did, he suddenly spoke, “I won’t let your pain be for nothing.”

Sylvia was startled for a second, then gave him a small smile. “I believe you.”

“Alright.” Ernest nodded.

The next morning, sunlight streamed in as Erica woke up with a pounding hangover headache. Her brain felt like it was wrapped in cotton, and she could barely gather her thoughts.

Squinting sleepily, she groped for her phone on the nightstand and glanced at the time–barely past eight.

But as soon as a notification popped up on her screen, she was jolted wide awake–she almost sat bolt upright in bed, heart racing.

Ernest: [Come home tonight.]

When Erica realized she was holding Stella’s phone, she let out a long sigh of relief and muttered, “Man, that scared me. I thought that jerk lost his mind.”

If Stella were by herself, she could’ve forced herself out of bed no problem. But with Erica sweet–talking her like that, there was just no way she could say no.

‘Figures Erica nodded, lips pursed. “He’s such a workaholic–no way he’d stick around waiting for lunch.”

“Hey, you’ve still got me,” Stella said, settling in beside her.

“Oh, Stella, you’re the sweetest,” Erica whined, wrapping herself around Stella’s arm.

Just as they were starting to eat, Stella’s phone suddenly buzzed–it was Simon calling.

Stella answered, and Simon’s voice came right through, sounding a bit irritated. “I’ve been calling you all morning. Why are you only picking up now?”

She glanced at her phone–there was a bunch of missed calls, but all from when it was on silent. She didn’t bother explaining, just said, “What’s up?”

Simon hesitated for a moment. “Did you forget? We planned yesterday to take Daisy out today

He’d been up since the crack of dawn, prepping everything.

Erica, eavesdropping with zero shame, rolled her eyes. “Seriously, nobody takes a kid out that early”

Simon, recognizing Erica’s voice, immediately ditched any politeness meant for Stella. “Well, you didn’t say what time we’re going, so how am I supposed to know? Better get up early than be late, right?”

Erica snorted, “Come on, use your brain. If we’re taking a kid out, it’s gonna be in the afternoon, obviously?

Morning would be freezing, noon would be boiling hot–afternoon was the only time that actually made

sense.

Simon could hear her mocking tone and flipped out, “I…”

“That’s enough,” Stella interjected, trying to keep the peace as the two kept bickering, even through the phone.

She hurriedly said, “We’re having lunch right now. We’ll come pick up Daisy once we’ve finished.”
