The unexpected sound of Travis‘ voice startled me. Instinctively, I looked toward its source. That was when I hoticed a flashing red dot on the headliner at the very back of the car. Seeing this made me realize that the car had been equipped with a remote monitoring device.
Travis had been monitoring the car this whole time. That was how his men had shown up so quickly. They must have rushed over the moment I knocked out Ms. Plume and the other guy.
My chances of successfully making it out of this alive were even slimmer now.
Still, giving up was the same as dying. And I refused to just roll over and die. Not when I had a chance of surviving if I fought back. So, of course, I took my chances.
Closing my eyes, I floored the accelerator. I charged straight into the motorbikes that blocked my way.
My actions were reckless. Seeing this, they quickly reacted to save themselves. Those who were fast enough managed to swerve out of the way. And those who weren’t abandoned their bikes and ran out of the way.
I succeeded in clearing the bikes out of my path. But the car had also suffered some serious damage. Its intelligent sensors were beeping incessantly, which I immediately turned off.
It didn’t matter that the car was damaged or its front was falling off. At a time like this, I was going to continue pushing forward as long as it could still move.
However, I didn’t get very far due to the car’s flat tire. So, I had no choice but to abandon it and run into the forest. Travis‘ men discarded their bikes and chased after me on foot. Upon seeing this from a distance,
I started to panic. I became scared out of my mind. I was terrified I would die today on this nameless, remote mountain.
The old me wouldn’t have been so afraid if I had found herself in this sort of situation.
I had a strong body growing up and had been super athletic. Plus, I was also gifted in various sports and had trained in Taekwondo since I was five. So, I would have no issues fighting against ordinary people.
I had participated in a track meet back in college. And I had emerged as champion of the women’s long–distance
event.
So, if I were to give it her all, I would have a good chance of shaking off the pursuers. Not only that, I might even have a certain chance of winning should she face off against them.
Thus, I wouldn’t have been in despair if I were still my past self. And I certainly wouldn’t have had to beg Irvin to release me. In fact, I would have boldly taken the risk and fought against the odds.
But I was no longer the person I used to be. So, it was no question that I wouldn’t even be able to fight them now.
Plus, I hadn’t even started running, and I was already winded. My injured limbs weren’t obeying me at all. Thev weren’t as nimble as they used to be.
So, despite having a head start, I soon heard my pursuers‘ footsteps closing in. My fear intensified at this.
And to make matters worse, it was winter. Snow covered the ground, so I was leaving footprints behind wherever I went. This made it very easy to track me.
And it seemed Travis had also rushed over.
Holding up a megaphone, he shouted from behind me, “Stop wasting time, Mrs. Sawyer. We’ll catch you soon

enough. So I advise you to just give up and come quietly. I may even spare you if you cooperate.”
1 stubbornly continued forward. I wasn’t going to trust a single thing he said either! Annoyed by this, Travis threatened, “I’m about ready to lose my patience with you if you don’t stop right now! And if that happens, things won’t be pretty. Once we get a hold of you, my men and I are going to have all the fun we want with you. Then, you’ll know what it truly means to die miserably!”
Travis was a lazy glutton who rarely exercised. So, climbing the mountain was even more arduous for him than it was for me. And my body wasn’t as fully functional as his, given the steel plates and pins inserted in my bones.
As such, Travis didn’t want to chase me up the mountain. But he was worried I would get a chance to escape if he didn’t follow the group. Given that he had reached a dead end, he was determined to catch me no matter what. He shouted at me as he ran. He played mind games with me to get me to give up and stop running.
But I completely ignored him even though my entire body ached terribly. I continued pushing myself up mountain despite feeling like I had no strength left.
the
So much time had passed. Surely, Irvin would have noticed something was amiss by now. Even if it wasn’t to save me, he would definitely rush over with his men to avenge Julianne.
I just had to buy myself more time. Then, I would still have a chance of surviving!
